Job description
IBM Research’s Smarter Cities Technology Centre (SCTC) in Dublin, Ireland is currently seeking both entry-level and experienced researchers in statistical modeling, optimisation, and applied mathematics. The successful candidate will develop analytical models using large-scale and multi-dimensional data sets, with a focus on intelligent planning and control of urban and environmental systems, including intelligent management of constrained resources (e.g., water, energy), transportation and mobility services, and sustainable energy. Projects will involve identifying applications of data-intensive modeling, invention of suitable algorithms and models for these applications, and incorporation of resulting analytics in distributed and parallel software systems.

Candidates must have demonstrated ability to define research plans, carry out leading research, and publish research results through professional journals, academic conferences, and patents. As a researcher you will be expected to formalise challenging problems, develop new solutions, and work with business & development teams to ensure these solutions have a significant impact. We work together with IBM Research worldwide and top academic partners and expect our researchers to publish results in top-tier conferences and journals

Required :
  • Doctoral degree in Engineering, Operations Research, Control Theory, Applied Mathematics, or Computer Science
  • Strong publication record in top-tier conferences and journals
What is the Smarter Cities Technology Centre ?
By 2050, an estimated 70% of the world’s population will live in cities – up from 13% in 1900. Already, cities consume an estimated 75% of the world’s energy, emit more than 80% of greenhouse gases, and lose as much as 20% of their water supply due to infrastructure leaks. As their urban populations continue to grow and these metrics increase, civic leaders face an unprecedented series of challenges to scale and optimise their infrastructures. To meet the challenges of our increasingly urbanised world, IBM recently announced its first Smarter Cities Technology Centre.

This new R&D centre aims to quickly grow to a highly skilled and cross-disciplinary team of as many as 200 researchers and software engineers. The team will focus on data mining and machine learning, statistical modeling & optimisation, control and decision systems, knowledge & data engineering, geospatial analysis and visualisation, simulation, real-time computing, and urban and environmental systems, e.g., water, energy, transportation. It will work closely with city authorities, universities, and small/large businesses to advance science & technology for smarter urban and environmental systems.


Doctorate Degree

At least 2 years experience in optimisation, statistical modeling, or systems control

At least 2 years experience in software programming with C++ or Java

English: Fluent


At least 1 year experience in statistical analysis and modeling applied to urban or environmental systems
