Electricity Supply Board (ESB) selected this as a representative review
Generally, ESB is a good place to work. The hours are good, approximately 36 per week, flexible start/finish times and working from home too to give greater flexibility to work life balance. People are friendly and family like. Plenty of opportunity to move into different roles, however, promotion up through the various bands is usually a slow burner. You do need to rotate around a bit and if you are looking to get up into a front line (team lead) to middle management position you will need to be prepared for that journey to take between 5 to 10 years. People in the main are friendly and good to work with. ESB partners with a lot of companies so expect to work with a lot of contractors if you are involved in project work, especially if you work within ESB head office in IT Services. ESB offers good support to it employees and promotes an inclusive Be Me at ESB culture. People and who they are and respect for who they are is top of the value list at ESB as is safety, physical and mental health and wellbeing. Salaries are good and are based on the band you are in (not the position per se) and annual pay increases are negotiated between the unions and management. There are also performance related pay increases on top of what’s negotiated by the unions. Yearly bonus and profit sharing payments are part of the benefits package along with good pension contributions (starts at 8%), shares in ESB, discounted electricity, sick pay and long term illness cover, death in service means your next of kin (if you are married or have dependents) will get 8 times your salary plus - more...

As part of my 3rd year studies of Marketing at Maynooth University, I was working as an intern at ESB where I was a member of the Digital Solutions Team. My job involved marketing the company's internal People Search platform to the 7000+ employees of the company and keeping this platform up to date and accurate. I was responsible for updating and editing new and existing company content on our internal platform.

Only got to be here for nine months but didnt want to leave as it was such a great experience. Loved the company, location and culture of the people there. I loved the canteen, too so much stress off me as didnt have to worry about cooking during the week.

Don't expect anything to happen quickly. Too many managers, too many territories. It's an OK place to work for younger people who want a protected environment, it is supportive that way. But for middle management, it is not a rewarding place to work. Not a place for innovation.
Protected, support for developing traditional skills
Too slow, too many managers, not innovative, poor leadership
Interesting work environment with the opportunity to diversify and experience a significant part of the business. ESB is a great place to work if you are interested in taking on a new challenge and understanding the complex world of the utilities industry
