Bad Reputation is Understandable

The place has a bad reputation, which is understandable. Working in JD was the worst job I’ve had so far and definitely wouldn’t recommend it to anybody. The managers are rude and unprofessional. You are spoken to as if you’re incompetent and made feel stupid. You get given out to for the smallest things; like how pants are hung , and if you do something wrong it’s made a big ordeal of. Staff are seen as names on a sheet and managers will give you the cold shoulder and cut your hours if you have an appointment or need time off work.I came into work every day feeling on edge and got a headache every day for the first two weeks from worrying about what kind of mood management was going to be in. As far as I know, most of the other staff disliked it too and at least five people left while I was there (which wasn’t very long). The rota always came out last minute and hours were unpredictable. The only little bit of a positive from working here were the other staff members my age as we could go on lunch together and stuck together as most of us felt tense in the job and disliked it. To anybody who is thinking of applying here it isn’t worth the hassle to even suck it up for a temporary contract unless you’ve very very thick skin.

Pros

Pay is okay, pleasant coworkers

Cons

Bad atmosphere

Awful management, toxic environment

After working in the company for years I’d seen a lot of different people pass through the job, but for some odd reason they really loved promoting those who were underaged/ inexperienced/ just plain daft. So it was an endless cycle of clowns being in mid management and totally mistreating staff that have been there 4 days and also those that have been there 4 years. Pay is terrible for what you have to deal with between customers and management. Only decent thing is it’s somewhat flexible for college. Just don’t let some of them know you’re in college otherwise they’ll treat you like you’re the scum of the earth. Some people that you work with are nice but it’s down to character

Pros

Flexibility

Cons

Ridiculous hours, poor management and pay

Toxic Environment

The only safe haven you had were your team mates, management were cliquey and had favourites. The workplace could get toxic real quick. Minimum pay work for maximum effort.

Pros

Staff Discount

Cons

Not a rewarding environment

Stressful and fast paced

Since I was a seasonal worker it was expected that it was fast paced because it was a Christmas period but I was told that I was working in the women’s shoes department but I was working there ALONE for 2-3 hours while every other department had approx 4 people. I was VERY stressed because I had about 5-6 customers asking me for sizes all at once and the mangers could see I’m struggling but NO help was given. As I was going to collect shoes I notice the managers talking about me, my staff colleagues told me also that she heard them talking about me which put me under great pressure and in a worried state. This was on my mind the whole day. Other management were nice and abit helpful but they would rush through stuff with you if your stuck on something they would just quickly go through it and expect you to know it. My staff colleagues thought the same! Overall enjoyable part was my lunch break !!! As I got to have a little cry to myself knowing I’ve to go back out to the stressful environment. Also as I was collecting shoes the stock department are SHOCKING as the whole staff floor are waiting for shoes to come down and that leaves customers furious. So expect customers to give out to you saying your awful at this job and expect managers to talk about you.

Pros

Get to have an hour lunch

Cons

Stressful work environment, poor management, don’t explain very well

Terrible Management

The managers are people who are clearly too young and have been promoted too quickly. They have no idea how to effectively manage their employees and communicate with their fellow managers. The only good thing about the job was the people I worked with.

Pros

Good bond between employees

Cons

Mismanagement

Fun place to work

JD Sports is an extremely facepacedplace to work. Some people are able for it others are not. Discount is only 25% off, would expect a bit more and is a limited number to spend for the year. A lot of part-time college students which is great but constant organisation of staff not turning up, etc not deoendable. Part-time workers get 0-4 hours per week during quiet times, only essential staff members (full-time) get full hours. Can request days off. Extra pay on a Sunday. Management are always on staff side thankfully, so customer complaints are resolved. Can feel a bit watchful with all security procedures. Management overall are great! Mental at Christmas. Not really a job for family oriented people, full-time hours can be very long. Minimum wage, not great

Pros

Limited discounts, ability to have certain days off, great management, fun place to work

Cons

A lot of young staff, high turnover, not great pay

Decent, but depends on where you work.

Honestly the job was pretty boring and it does end up being a lot of physical work bc of constantly getting new stock and having to move it around (also bc they make you push the heavy boxes onto the floor by yourself) but the whole job is basically hanging up clothes. I personally enjoyed it bc of the other staff working there but the management is terrible, when there was a change of managers in my shop every single member of staff was underpaid (some were paid nothing at all) and we had to wait another month to get what we were owed (and we were underpaid AGAIN, many of us tried to reach out to those in charge yet were unsuccessful and left underpaid). Talking to managers sometimes felt like talking to brick walls and they did show some favouritism. I’ve heard of managers in other JD shops being horrible and the staff being rude but luckily mine were good/bearable. I personally loved how fun and fast paced my shop was and I’d happily go back to it, but again it totally depends on which shop you work in, it’s hit or miss.

Pros

The staff were great people, felt like a little family.

Cons

Bad management and communication, little care for seasonal staff, quite physical work.

Very unprofessional

Very unrewarding work environment pretty much impossible to progress your career no matter how hard your work, communication through management is non existent different rules apply depending on what management is in on the day and it gets very confusing for staff aswell as customers and it always results in very unhappy customers that management leave staff to deal with, rosters always last minute, and theres constant problems with pay which is never really resolved because they have to add it to the following pay slip but it’s just results in us having to pay more tax so we are still down money even though it’s the company’s fault

Pros

25% staff discount on an allowance

Cons

Poor management, constantly dealing with unhappy customers, minimum hours always given, cannot progress in this company not matter how hard you try, the written rules for the entire company only apply to some instead of everyone, the list goes on and on

It’s the equivalent to a satanic cult

Worked there for many years . supervisor for four years . Always tried to keep to my self . Until I had to moved to a smaller store . I seen JD for how it really is . Management and staff are snakes and try to bully ,intimidate harass junior staff members . Always out to get some one in the team . Finding ways to discipline or force staff out of the company ,if the don’t “fit in” or “agree” with certain things . It’s basically a satanic cult . I would rather be locked up in Alcatraz prison than Work in for these showers of C U Next Tuesdays

Pros

Discounts

Cons

Bad managers, bulling is ongoing, long hours, bad pay

Working in JD

JD sports is a very fast paced work place especially in winter. With sales on you have to be determined and not let the amount of work overwhelm you which is what I was very good at controlling. Being a friendly and helpful character benefits you and also customers. In JD you have to be good at knowing how to sell products and how to sell products with products for example the crop protect should be tried to be sold with every shoe if possible.

Pros

Enjoyable if you are into fashion and want to help people

Cons

Stressful at times when it’s very busy

Dreadful company to work for

The management have no idea how to actually lead by example and prove why they're in the position that they're in. Just young peopel who have been allowed to climb the ladder too quickly and too young and don't know how to speak to people and feel all they have to do is tell people what to do. The HR and Payroll team are so clueless. Couldn't sort out my tax for me for months and messed up my payments during the covid 19 pandemic and when you contact them they're no help at all. Worst place i've ever worked. Can't find one positive about working there at all. Would not recommend to anyone.

Good job, not enough room to move up the working ladder.

Working in JD is a great foot in the door as a customer service representative/sales assistant. Unfortunately, I felt there was no room to move up the working ladder.

fast-paced and productive workplace

A typical day working at JD sports would include coming in and first of all checking your target for the day and then proceeding yo go onto the shop floor and help any customers who may have queries that need answering. the hardest part of the job would be when it's busy the speed they expect you to work at. management was very outgoing and always willing to help me.

Work there is fun

They are lazy with pay and complaints that you may have . Sometimes not informative enough but work there is fun being in a team environment. That's it really.
