Fun place to work

Indeed featured review

The most useful review selected by Indeed
Overall JD was an okay place to work at , the staff were very friendly and fun Monthly pay is annoying plus I feel like staff are underpaid considering how busy the shop can get

Fast paced, underpaid

Underpaid and not appreciated.Underpaid for the work you do considering the shop can be so busy. Management pick favourites and the pay is not worth is for how much work is thrown on floor staff.

Horrible place to work

I don’t recommend working here at all. The pay is shocking for the work you are expected to do and it is paid monthly so impossible to live on. The managers are horrible and constantly pick on people if you are not the favourite. By far the worst place I have ever worked

Pros

Staff discount

Cons

Poor management, poor pay

Horrible

Don’t work here it is absolutely horrible, management act like 10 year old children and pay is not worth for the amoutn of work that is thrown at you by managers.

Stressful Job Horrible Horrible management

I wouldn’t recommend this job only if it’s your first job and you need work experience. The only thing that’s good about this job is the discount and the staff (not the managers). My experience was ok as I knew I had to become one of the favourites of the managers.

Ok

ProsThe other sales associates were so fun to work with and helped each otherConsThe managers and supervisors were extremely unprofessional. They would stand on the shop floor on their phones and watch staff members struggle to carry dozens of boxes to and from the lifts. Shifts would go out so last minute. It would be Saturday night and I would not know if I was working the next day. Management would pressure staff to sell crep and if you couldn't they would have an attitude with you. Only managers would get commission on crep products not sales associates. The staff turnover was high. The only people who would be promoted to supervisor or manager were staff who did not go to university (in the particular JD I worked for)

Fast Paced

Very fast paced and busy especially around christmas but it passes time quickly , paid fairly for my age. Could get more shifts if you wanted as you can cover people’s shifts a lot

Fun workplace

Good place to work.Good lunchesCan be stressful because fast paced but overall ok Uniform is good.Hours are ok Good place to work for first job if you can handle stress

Pros

Free lunches

Cons

Long hours

No care for employees

Spent very little time training new employees and left them to their own. Took out hours from our timetable so they could pay us less. Didn’t include my final hours before resigning and removed my account before my next salary.

Management are horrible and manipulative, it was like a cult, be a bully or be bullied, manipulative manager who bullies girls consistently

Worst experience of my life. Management is horrible, treated unfairly, nothing constructive ever, you never done anything right. To get hours you had to kiss up to managers

Cons

Management, don’t know where they find these people.

Painful

Don’t work here management are manipulative, make out you will have lots of opportunities but you don’t. Rushed around doing 10 jobs at once , have to kiss up to managers to get holidays and hours , your pay will never ever be right always mistakes and they never get fixed.

Pros

Uniform is comfy

Cons

Everything else

Stressful and toxic workplace

Toxic management culture. You must bully or be bullied. High turnover of staff because of this culture which means the workload is often heavy for those that remain. Only decent thing is the discount.

Stressful understaffed low pay

Overworked and underpaid. Handling a lot of grief off of customers for warehouse mistakes. Online refunds are a nightmare. No incentive. No pay rises without promotions. Worked there 4 years got 3 promotions I’d say mounting to an extra €2 an hour compared to staff. End up doing the work of 5 different. Overall exhausting job and receiving no thanks. If you get robbed you’re blamed by the big hard men who haven’t a clue , like they’ve worked a day in store in their life

Pros

Discount (when u didn’t run out)

Cons

Underpaid, not appreciated, just work somewhere else

Unprofessional and rude workplace

I’ve been working in JD sports in Newbridge for the last 3 years they are almost famous for always messing up someone’s pay, I myself am still waiting on money they owe me for over 3 months now, not only that but the management is very unprofessional and gossip about their own staff, payroll or hr are impossible to get through to, training is minimal and you are left to figure stuff out for yourself, there are no cleaners and management expect staff to clean the shop floor with a broken hoover that doesn’t even have the nozzle part and the mirrors with toilet paper as they never remember to provide us with the right equipment, not to mention no one ever cleans the staff toilets, the overall vibe of the shop is awful and I wouldn’t recommend this job to anyone who respects themselves definitely not in the newbridge branch!

Pros

25% off items €700 yearly allowance

Cons

Incorrect breaks, Unprofessional work environment, The place is filthy shop floor and back of house, Roster is always late, Fire exits are always obstructed, Clear favouritism

Bad Management

The work itself was great because of the people I worked with and the pay. The managers can be bad and inconsiderate. Lack of organisation on the company's part lead to me getting full-time hours as a part-time worker.

Pros

Co-workers, lots of hours available

Cons

Management

Not nice to work for

The management have an aura about them that they are so much above you and treat you like you’re their minions. There’s also so many unnecessary security checks. Also I could be an hour to 2 hours working after closing times because the standards on the clothes weren’t good enough. People who worked in the shoe department were screamed at for not selling enough crep shoe protectant.

Pros

Good pay on bank holidays

Cons

Everything else

Part time being paid monthly is not very rewarding

Part time staff should be paid weekly and in the JD store I worked in it was not a busy shop and not enough hours where received by myself so not enough hours to keep me Interested

Cons

Monthly pay for part time staff

Bad Reputation is Understandable

The place has a bad reputation, which is understandable. Working in JD was the worst job I’ve had so far and definitely wouldn’t recommend it to anybody. The managers are rude and unprofessional. You are spoken to as if you’re incompetent and made feel stupid. You get given out to for the smallest things; like how pants are hung , and if you do something wrong it’s made a big ordeal of. Staff are seen as names on a sheet and managers will give you the cold shoulder and cut your hours if you have an appointment or need time off work.I came into work every day feeling on edge and got a headache every day for the first two weeks from worrying about what kind of mood management was going to be in. As far as I know, most of the other staff disliked it too and at least five people left while I was there (which wasn’t very long). The rota always came out last minute and hours were unpredictable. The only little bit of a positive from working here were the other staff members my age as we could go on lunch together and stuck together as most of us felt tense in the job and disliked it. To anybody who is thinking of applying here it isn’t worth the hassle to even suck it up for a temporary contract unless you’ve very very thick skin.

Pros

Pay is okay, pleasant coworkers

Cons

Bad atmosphere

Awful management, toxic environment

After working in the company for years I’d seen a lot of different people pass through the job, but for some odd reason they really loved promoting those who were underaged/ inexperienced/ just plain daft. So it was an endless cycle of clowns being in mid management and totally mistreating staff that have been there 4 days and also those that have been there 4 years. Pay is terrible for what you have to deal with between customers and management. Only decent thing is it’s somewhat flexible for college. Just don’t let some of them know you’re in college otherwise they’ll treat you like you’re the scum of the earth. Some people that you work with are nice but it’s down to character

Pros

Flexibility

Cons

Ridiculous hours, poor management and pay

Toxic Environment

The only safe haven you had were your team mates, management were cliquey and had favourites. The workplace could get toxic real quick. Minimum pay work for maximum effort.

Pros

Staff Discount

Cons

Not a rewarding environment
