Company management preferred acquiring technology products instead of building or innovating in house. Worked on four different acquired products with innovation being integrating features instead of adding new products.

The people you work with at Symantec are great. The atmosphere is collaborative and constructive. The management style I have experienced is supportive and the work-home balance has been great. The biggest challenge is that for the last five years at least there have been several critical transitions in leadership and large scale layoffs which have resulted in challenges to morale. It has been hard to see so many great employees with knowledge and talent suddenly leave.

The company is down sizing. They plan to RIF more than 2000 positions, so this is not a good time to join.
Wait until 2020, when the merge with Broadcom finished.

Not a hard company to work at, but also company that doesn't have a bright future. Management was mediocre and company was large enough to have plenty of office politics that plagued the company's prospect. The job does pay well enough to cover the bills.

You can learn a lot at Symantec and enhance your tech stack repertoire. There are a lot of very bright people to learn from.

Management is the big negative though. They like to think the run the teams as "Agile", but are in reality more of a hybrid - Agile when it suits management, Kanban when it suits them, Cowboy when it suits them. In other words, it's "just do what I tell and get done when I tell you, but I will most likely change my mind about what a release has to contain and when it must be done. I'll stress you out about finishing something by a certain date - only to change the feature requirements at the last minute and move the date out by a month; so that vacation you didn't take to get things done ... well, sorry, we didn't need it done by then after all." Then, of course, the employee gets criticized for lack of efficiency.

Executives talk to everyone like we're a team and incentivize with stock - only to renege if they can be bought out and make the executives a boat load of money. Sorry "team"! You're only a team when it comes to the work; not when it comes to the reward. They will do incredibly stupid things, like take away your personal cubicle waste can "because the liners cost too much, as does the cost to have janitorial services empty them." So, just get up every time you have something to throw away and go to a common, shared waste/recycle bin. Of course, they're too ignorant to realize the lost time in productivity every time a six figure engineer has to get up, walk over to a common waste bin, and discard an item, far outweighs the cost of liners

Symantec purchased Veritas Software around 2000. They never really understood how to leverage it in their security portfolio. However, we were a big part of their income, so they had to pay attention to it. This led to the big separation in 2015 where it was bought by Carlyle group.

Working for Symantec was good. They were a good company and did alot of things right. Their rewards and benefits were great! Their problem was that they didn't allow innovation and that created stagnation in our products. That has caused the products today to be in a declining market with no products to replace them. They are now focused on Security again after the separation and it was the right choice, but a difficult one for sure.
Pros
Benefits, work/life balance, culture.
Cons
Leadership, innovation was stagnant in data protection side of the house.

The remote office in Texas was not large or have as many perks as working in the HQ. The hardest part of the job was the product we supported was extremely complex and took years to learn on a granular level. That was one of the best things as well, every hour was an opportunity to learn. Network, programming, code, systems, processes, databases, cloud your only limits were set by each individual's desire to learn. Great group of people and teams.
Pros
workplace culture, Compensation, Benefits, Flexible work schedules and environments
Cons
With such an intense product Job Work/Life Balance was difficult.

One day everything is great , the next day your subtly being managed out - under the guise of 'everyone should know how to do everyone else's job' - and then you get a call with the managerspeak 'I want to share with you some important company news... '

Then you're job hunting again... that's the Symantec way.
Pros
Deep discount on Norton products, good benefits.
Cons
Poor management, frequent layoffs or RIFs, steady erosion of local talent to favour offshoring

Symantec has been great with accommodations that I needed.

What I learned during my 20 years:

- Security practices

- Tracking suspicious computer/network behaviors

- Watching for individual/personal behaviors to watch out for abuse of network/corporate resources.

- Backup & Server availability.

Great place to work. I have changed three groups, two years in the first, four years in the second and six years in the third. I've learnt a lot , grown a lot and completed a part time Master's at USC sponsored by Symantec. The first group coded in Java, the second and third in C++ with some C#. Great support thru tough times. However advancement seems impossible in terms of promotions etc. Sometimes it seems like there are politics though I can't put my finger on what. The tone of management can be different at different hours. The group I work in has something like two managers, two technical leads and a bunch of engineers who are all stepping on each other's toes. Sometimes for the same issues the reaction is different depending on the person.
Pros
Great place to learn and grow
Cons
Politics, disconnect and difficult to advance

I really appreciate the management and work culture. Symantec truly follows its motto "Work hard, Party harder". It feels good when company value your work and gives you credits for your work. Its a good way of motivation. Also the training held by professional and peers helps to enhance to greater extend.

You plan for development of a product, spend almost 4-5 months on design, development and reviews, and suddenly development of product stops for management decisions. Decisions on product development strategy and product development itself changes, as management changes on higher level, which is almost once in 3-4 months.Salary benefits are good. Work life balance is good.
Pros
Work life balance
Cons
Management changes after each couple of months
