Stressful and not worth it
Retail Betting Assistant (Former Employee) - Tipperary, County Tipperary - 12 May 2023
Indeed featured review
The most useful review selected by IndeedIt really depends on the team you are working with and location of the store. Some stores are in more rough areas or busier. Some are very quiet and boring. The higher up management does not care about the staff. They'd have single open and close if managers in store do not fight it. Training is not good as a result revolving door of staff. A lot of grey areas when it comes to rules so no job security. One rule for regular customers another for new people. If you do not know who the are regulars... Then tough.
Pros
Free lunch and paid boredom
Cons
Customers are hostile and life balance is very difficult

Horrible
Retail Betting Assistant (Current Employee) - Tipperary, County Tipperary - 26 September 2023
The shops have now gone quiet so the 12 and 13hr shifts are really long. You are nearly always working over your contracted hours as there is no staff. Pay is very bad.

Great Place to work
Retail Betting Assistant (Current Employee) - Dublin, County Dublin - 26 September 2023
Great colleagues and good bonuses and opportunities to earn more. Enjoyed working here and have made great friends. Pay is good and progression is easy if you work hard

Boring , it's taking bets and then translating on arkle, as you do it all , emptying cash machines etc
Retail Betting Assistant (Former Employee) - Waterford, County Waterford - 12 September 2023
I did explain I had no betting ,gambling knowledge but got the job as I've excellent customer service. Ongoing training online whilst your working ,which was poor and colleagues are busy ,plus not really eager you succeed as to get up the ladder is very tough so kept down and having to do relief work in 5 , 6 differing branches. Wages are disgusting for a billion dollars company FLUTTER PAY BETTER WAGES ,YOUR MAKING IT IN GAMBLING as most people loose money to them ....overall , I wouldn't go near them I'd you want to climb the career ladder and if your a good bookie other staff will pull you down 👇
Pros
Odd tips from winners who are real decent ppl
Cons
Wages are very poor for a very wealthy company

Soul destroying
Manager (Current Employee) - Cork, County Cork - 15 August 2023
Long, unsociable hours working on your own. Made more and more difficult with baffling management decisions. Nothing to gain personally and no recognition for going above and beyond.

Miserable
Retail Betting Assistant (Former Employee) - Limerick, County Limerick - 11 August 2023
Worked there for 5 years. No progression. Management is unapproachable and unappreciative of hard work. Unsociable hours for unsatisfactory pay. Unhealthy work environment

Not what it used to be
Manager (Former Employee) - Cork, County Cork - 16 May 2023
No communication with staff, no investment in retail sector, single manning in an often abusive setting, do not care about staff mental health. Emphasis isn't on real sporting events anymore, just virtual events

Ok workplace
Retail Betting Assistant (Former Employee) - Blanchardstown, County Dublin - 20 April 2023
It was ok, most of the staff is lovely isn’t that hard of a job once you get a hang of it get paid for breaks which is good, they are not that understanding if you are late etc

Avoid
Deputy Manager (Former Employee) - Limerick, County Limerick - 14 April 2023
High level of bullying in the company, pay doesn't reflect the level of work and you will be rostered for all evenings, weekends and holidays. There is no regard for customer safety in relation to gambling habits, it's regularly encouraged to allow problem gamblers to keep betting.
Pros
Pay is above minimum wage
Cons
12 hour shifts without shift pay

Jobs at Paddy Power
People are great, hours not so much
Retail Betting Assistant (Current Employee) - Dublin City Centre, County Dublin - 8 April 2023
The people you will work with are some of the nicest most laid back people, on the other hand the hours are usually 10-12 hour shifts 9:30am-9:30pm if you don’t mind this it’s a great place to work as they offer 4 day work week

You can have a career here, not just a job.
HSU Agent (Former Employee) - Broomhill Road, Dublin 24 - 7 March 2023
I worked for Paddy Power for nearly 10 years & I really enjoyed it. Interesting work, smart, helpful coworkers & a lot of fun. I only left because I accepted voluntary redundancy after the merger with Betfair. I wish now, that I'd stayed longer. It's a really good place to work, particularly if you are looking for something different. Some kind of interest in Sports does help but is not essential. I'm happy to recommend Paddy Power as an employer, big time. They can offer you a fair rate of pay, (I believe you would start on a minimum of €12 ph in Retail) an annual bonus, share save scheme (after a relatively short period), a lot of variety, innovation, fun & above all, real opportunities to progress quickly. Possible areas you could work in include Sports Betting & Trading, Gaming, Risk, Customer Service, Compliance, Security, IT, Safer Gambling, Social Media & Marketing (they are market leaders in this area) & of course, Retail. By the way, during the lockdown they continued to pay all Retail staff even though the shops very often had to close. It can be fairly fast-paced & you'll have to be willing & able to embrace change but the only real negative I can think of is that the 24/7 nature of the business means you'll almost certainly have to prepared to be flexible & be available to work some weekends. That's it. Go for it!
Pros
Real opportunities to build a career
Cons
Some weekend work inevitable

Not a great company to work for at all in so many ways
IT TL (Former Employee) - Clonskeagh, County Dublin - 13 December 2022
The Clique Brigade is strong with this one... If you value your mental health stay away ftom the gambling industry and in particular PP. Legacy staff seem to have the run of the company with interjection from new blood who putting it lightly don't know their @*** from their elbows. Wouldn't recommend the company to anyone looking to make a career as brown nosery is rewarded more than talent.
Pros
You can get very good at looking busy
Cons
Work week is atrocious days/ hours

Favouritism and no advancement
Senior RBA (Current Employee) - Galway, County Galway - 11 December 2022
A lot of favouritism from the higher ups while we’re violently understaffed! The employee turnover rate is insane! Some managers are amazing and want to do their best for you but because of other managers and upper management the good managers hands are tied! We’re punished with insane hours because of the company’s lack of hiring! The general staff are very good and kind people but hardly any managers actually care about their staff. They give themselves the best hours and leave us to have the rest! Most managers only work 2/3 day weeks while getting paid for the full week while the rest of us are doing 5/6 days every week!
Pros
Friendly staff
Cons
Awful management

Very busy with long days/hours
Retail Betting Assistant (Former Employee) - Dublin, County Dublin - 29 November 2022
Very busy role with some not very friendly customers. Long hours and days which some might find they prefer to get more days off. Colleagues were all lovely with a real team effort

Flexible workplace for students
Customer betting assistant (Former Employee) - Dublin, County Dublin - 26 September 2022
Great place for students as you can take an 8 hour contact but can always do extra hours. Decent enough pay, nice colleagues, customers can be rude sometimes

Poor Work/Life Balance but Easy Work
Deputy Manager (Current Employee) - Dublin, County Dublin - 2 August 2022
Very relaxed and stress free work but ultimately long days and increased pressure from staffing issues make it slightly soul destroying with no sense of purpose typical days for a manager will be 12hrs long and for new hires 8hrs from 12:30am-9:30pm, no clear career path even outside the company from experience and opportunities balance from their ability to replace your current role. 5years as deputy manager left looking for somewhere new to start a career.

Shop staff great. Upper management have no interest in staff
Senior RBA (Former Employee) - Cork, County Cork - 2 August 2022
Too much travelling and chances of promoting very slim, as jobs already decided before interviews. Favourites get shifts they want and rest have to take whats left. Rosters not fair
