Best paying job in retail

Indeed featured review

The most useful review selected by Indeed
First few years are hard but once you get into the swing of how the store runs it’s fine. It’s a very busy environment the days fly. The pay is very good. The only thing staff get a bonus at Xmas management do not

Pros

Good pay

Cons

No bonus

Great place to work

Great place to work, we all work as a team and encourage each other, hard work but interesting each day. High expectations for managers but always Great training and resources available

Monotonous

My experience was mixed, the pay was good and 90% of the staff are lovely and welcoming/friendly. But on the other hand, a lot of the managers are not much older or even younger than half of the staff yet they are on huge power trips and are constantly criticising or passive aggressive. I was supposed to be part time staff while in college yet ended up working 6 days a week and 30+ hours. EXTREMELY overstaffed, to the point where up to 20 of us got sent home early nearing the end of the day on multiple occasions as there was literally nothing for us to do and we were not needed, and also it was a regular occurrence our names wouldn’t even be on the daily task rota due to there being probably 150-200 staff on at a time. However, every single person I know who requested less days and less hours was rejected? The colleagues are the best part about this job but other than that it’s painfully boring. You can be standing amongst the same 3 tables/rails for up to 5 hours at a time just repeatedly folding etc yet if you ask to move, half the time you’re told you can’t.

Fun place to work as a student

Very nice place to work at in my opinion. I enjoyed my time there and they were always very reasonable considering how many late absences I had. Gave 4 stars because I didn't like the manager there .. but other than that it was perfect.. reasonable hours, easy to get to

Pros

11.22 an hour

Cons

Long hours sometimes

Best retailer I’ve worked for

Really good place to work. Very busy with so much to do all the time, but well organised. Good opportunities to progress as well. Job security is a big pro. Great environment to work in.

Great place to work

I have been working here for nearly.two years and highly recommend it. The staff and most managers can be lovely. It is fun and exciting but can be stressful at times. It is easy to get on with everyone

Stressful and Monotonous

Seems fine at first but slowly becomes unbearable. Immense preassure being put on managers that is then being put on to staff. Treated like a number not a person.

Pros

Good pay

Cons

4 hour shifts

Competitive yet rewarding

Great company with massive opportunities to develop. You need to be self motivated but if you are the opportunities are endless. No day is the same as the previous great variety

Expect too much from you

Lots of change within the company at the moment. Would not recommend mgt. long hours with No structure. Thankless job. You either become broken or mental.

Productive and fun workplace

Colleagues are fun to work with and management was always fair and friendly. Daily tasks were always clearly outlined and you are given opportunities to learn and grow within the company if you wish. The downsides are lack of job security with fixed term contracts and often late shifts.

Pros

Good pay

Cons

Lack of job security

Well run, good pay, career advancement opportunities

As retail goes Penneys is prob the best of the lot. The pay is great, the environment is easy going but the work can be demanding. They keep you on your toes but the days go fast. Plenty of opportunities to advance if you want to.

Not a nice place to work

Not a very nice place to work. The customers are very rude all the time for no reason and the management treat you like a number not a person. I’ve had a rude customer spit at me once

Okay but not for long term

You have to lift extremely heavy and sometimes extremely large (nearly as big as myself) boxes from deliveries. If you don’t have very above average strength you won’t be able to handle it as no one is there to help you. Majority of managers on a power trip for no reason and even some of the sales staff that have worked there a long time. Working on tills is super easy though. The rest is either too physically draining or too boring. The day drags as there’s not even music in the stores and you get given out to for even saying hi to a colleague on the shop floor.

Pros

Decent pay

Cons

Bad management, physically draining work

Not recommended

The job is not as advertised. There are no shift patterns, you have to be available from 7am to 10pm (for 12-14hrs work a week). Parents or carers wanting to go back to work beware: you won't get hours to suit, you won't get holidays during midterm, easter etc. When the job says flexible, you're the one that has to be flexible, not them. Students are struggling to try to make it work for them. Top management are awful, floor managers are actually lovely but they get treated badly imo. Just reviewing to inform people what the job actually is for retail assistant.

I would definitely not recommend a job at Penneys

Only reason for 1 star is there is no option for 0 stars . I would certainly not advise working for this company. Starting band 11.5 to 14 hours to be fully flexible from 7am to 10pm Sunday to Saturday, so basically you will get basic hours of 14 a week and during trough periods or overspending on their budgets you will get 12 hours. Hours split into 4 hour days. Occasionaly hours will increase ..They hire extra staff without giving out the extra hours to staff already there as if there is a band review you would be entitled to go up a band if you worked over your band for a long period so they hire temporary staff instead on the 1st band so making it impossible to go up a band. You will be phoned few times a week on days off asking you to come in with no notice given. Absolutely no flexibility for working parents but flexibility with students which they are now planning to remove flexibility for students also. And as for holiday pay what a joke the way they calculate it ! if I took 1 summer week one month and the second summer week a month later, the second week I might be lucky to come out with 4 hours pay.

Pros

When it's time to go home and fellow retail assistants

Cons

Everything bar fellow retail assistants
