The most useful review selected by IndeedNever ask too much of you, the work isn’t overwhelming or difficult. Professional management and good coworkers. It can be difficult to get holidays or more hours. The pay is very good.

Not great
Sales Assistant (Former Employee) - Cork - 25 September 2023
If you want to be sad everyday work here. I used to spend everyday dreading to go into the building and see what I’d have to be faced with on the day.

Decent job
Sales Assistant (Current Employee) - Limerick - 24 September 2023
Above average wage, hypocritical and unsupportive management that play favourites. Extremely busy and little to no understanding from managers if you were unable to finish your zone if it’s busy.

Very fun place to work
Sales Assistant (Former Employee) - Drogheda, County Louth - 6 September 2023
Great place to work. Would recommend for a first or second job. The experience you get is quite good. Management are fair and understanding. You don’t do the same thing in an 8 hour shift - so you are never bored and the day goes quickly.

cliquey and messy
Shop Assistant (Former Employee) - Cork, County Cork - 5 September 2023
Working here made me feel dehumanized. The supervisors give extra hours to their own favourites but when I asked for extra hours, I was told no---always. Also, the shoppers are constantly tossing around clothes and just leaving stuff on the floor, no manners or respect, and then I had to clean it up all the time. Sick of it, so I quit.

Do not work in Penneys Tralee!!
Retail Assistant (Former Employee) - Tralee, County Kerry - 11 August 2023
If you can get somewhere else to work I strongly advise to AVOID Penneys (specifically Tralee) for multiple reasons. 1.) HOURS They cut all of the part-time workers hours with absolutely no warning and lied and said that it was only temporarily. I went from 30 hours a week to 12!!! 2.) WORK-LIFE BALANCE Despite the severe hour cuts, the work-life balance remained poor. They scheduled only four-hour shifts, resulting in five shifts a week for part-time staff working 20 hours, causing disruptions to personal life and limited time for other commitments. 3.) MANAGEMENT This is perhaps the biggest reason of all. The managers are passive aggressive and condescending. There are far too many of them and they don't do anything besides talk to each other. They are extremely biased and only enforce the rules on workers they're not fond of (ex. the no talking rule). They also over hired by about 60 workers which led to all the part-time workers hours being cut. It was obvious they were being difficult about holidays or time off as a way to push out employees due to their over hiring problem. The management have a system were they review your work every 3, 5 and 10 weeks. They failed everyone ( all the part-time) on the most recent assessments at the end of summer over ridiculous non-issues such as talking and not looking happy. This further demonstrates them trying to save themselves on the over-hiring problem and is also frustrating to get a bad review from them when you do your work well. 4.) NO TALKING (absurd rule implemented by management) What is incredibly frustrating and extremely -

Great Pay and Busy Workplace
Retail Sales Assistant (Former Employee) - Castlebar, County Mayo - 6 August 2023
Pay is excellent for the type of work. Secure job once you're permanent. Management appreciate a good work/life balance. Management also expect the work to be done but the work is easy and busy! It's boring alot of the time, but what job isn't after a while. Most customers nice. Can have a good laugh at work too with coworkers and the nice customers! You're left alone when you just get on with the job and do your best. Short staffed sometimes but that's life! You always get your breaks on time no matter how busy it is.
Pros
Great Pay, Christmas bonus, work/life balance
Cons
Lots of complainers

Handy work time off difficult to get
Retail Assistant (Former Employee) - Limerick, County Limerick - 24 July 2023
Easy work folding tshirts etc but impossible to get time off and say goodbye to any sports/ hobbies you have at the weekends if you have them. you also do not get to choose when you take your holidays if you are new as it is all seniorority based.

Poor Management
Sales Assistant (Current Employee) - Killarney, County Kerry - 12 July 2023
Management very poor and training provided was inadequate. They expect you to do the work of an 8hr shift jammed into a 4 hour shift but refuse to give anyone extra hours and just hire extra staff (existing staff get reviewed yearly to move up to higher band contract (more hours)). God forbid you are ever sick because you are constantly questioned about it and are made to feel like you are a liar when you are genuinely ill. Some senior Management talk to their staff like there kids. Not a nice place to work at all.
Cons
Does not pay the bills

Flexible Workplace for Students
Sales Assistant (Current Employee) - Dublin, County Dublin - 12 July 2023
Good job for a college/school student. Lovely management and staff. A wide availability of hours and part time contracts. Gets a bit repetitive but days are busy and fast!

Extremely stressful environment
Sales Assistant (Former Employee) - Ireland - 12 July 2023
This job can be extremely stressful or extremely boring - no in between. When on the floor you can be made walk around the same small section for hours doing absolutely nothing. You are not allowed to talk to fellow staff members either. There is a hierarchy when it comes to staff, older staff treat newer staff horribly and will take advantage. Holiday times are extremely stressful.

Great enviornment
Global Trainee Buyer, Children's Essentials (Current Employee) - Dublin, County Dublin - 11 July 2023
people are great to work with, flexy hours to give you back some personal time .no clear path for progression-very much dependant on the team you have been put on.

Fair pay
Sales Assistant (Former Employee) - Blanchardstown, County Dublin - 7 July 2023
The pay is good, and most of the managers are very approachable and friendly. Tasks are assigned fairly and clearly, and is overall quite organised. The shop floor however was incredibly hard to keep on top of. Most of the staff were quite friendly and helpful, but some were incredibly cliquey.

Big changes recently
Retail Assistant (Former Employee) - O’Connell Street, Dublin - 3 July 2023
Penneys recently removed all employee benefits - they wrote the Christmas Bonus out of the staff contract/significantly reduced the pay increase each year/have become extremely and irritatingly strict on changing shifts/your availability. The company seems to purposely creating a toxic work environment to only keep 16-18 year olds employed on minimum wages. They are waiting for their older staff on high income contracts to retire.
Pros
Pay is slightly over minimum wage
Cons
No free lunch/not flexible working hours/strict management
