Fast paced, hard work, enjoyable
Work like balance was the only hard thing about this job, working 6 days for 6 to 8 weeks at Christmas but overall I enjoyed my time and if didn't have small family would still be there. Pay was average for management but quite low for staff.

no work life balance
took 2 months from application to offer. Salary was good but not worth the cons. No work life balance long hours. Health and safety is implied as important but in reality it isn't on the floor and the deliveries. Unrealistic expectations at times. Very little staff discipline. If you happy to not have a balance be a manager here
Pros
salary
Cons
long hours heavy work load no work life balance

Constant bombardment of emails
Smyths is not a bad place to work. If you've got a good team, the atmosphere can be great. Pays alright too

You get a constant bombardment of emails. Sometimes 50+ a day. Head Office employees (buyers etc) talk to you like dirt. You need to be a self starter/motivator as well dones are non existent. The company constantly flout rules. 11 hour break between shifts. The break you are supposed to have between a night shift and a following day shift. You're asked to work 6 days a week, 12 hour days in the run up to Christmas. My starting salary breached national minimum wage rules under this set up.

The main warehouse where your deliveries come from flout health and safety rules, governing height of pallets, especially during peak times.

Twice a year, you are effectively a shop builder, completely removing aisles and building them up again. No one is trained properly to do this, and the company doesn't supply training for this. This in itself is highly dangerous and there have been stories from other stores of whole aisles collapsing.

If you raise a grievance, the company will do its utmost to protect their own, and you're then seen as a troublemaker. Mentioning the 48 hour opt out also sees you as effectively an outcast.

Some targets are impossible to hit. Stock loss. Company won't invest in security of their goods, via tags or security guards. Main warehouse denies all responsibility if goods are missing from delivery.

Health and safety only matters twice a year
Pros
Quick progression if you put your mind to it. Pay isn't bad. Pays weekly
Cons
Everything mentioned above. Say goodbye to any kind of personal life from November to January.
