Good wage. Training not very good but you learn on the job. Good fun if you like to help customers . Managers vary in kindness. But all the other staff were helpful

Company run by vultures
retail manager (Current Employee) - Toton, Derbyshire - 30 January 2023
I've worked for Tesco for 15 years and the company has got worse every year. In its current form Tesco is just a mess. Not enough hours to do the jobs they ask to be completed, not enough equipment, poor pay rises and no decent hourly contracts for people. If your a manager like me you will be threatened with redundancies every year and they will keep increasing your work load and give you no payrise. I now do the jobs of what used to be 6 managers who all had 36 hrs each to complete them jobs and have more staff at their disposal. I would avoid Tesco at all costs you will be nothing more than a number to them and they will cast you aside if it means it will protect the top bosses bonus which is in the millions every year.
Pros
Staff discount
Cons
Poor payrises, poor union, treated like dirt.

Fun
Personal Shopper (Current Employee) - New Milton, Hampshire - 29 January 2023
Working at tesco has many benefits. Flexible working and very good management. Free food/drink in your breaks. Very good rate of pay. Only downside is customers can get frustrated with you working there and not having certain products
Pros
Free Lunch
Cons
Customer Frustration

Unable to provide a living working here.
General Assistant (Current Employee) - Braintree - 29 January 2023
16 hour contracts are not enough to provide a living and the insistence on flexibility makes arrangements for childcare impossible. The low pay means many in Tesco rely on top from Universal Credit and from September those people will have to undergo regular work coach meetings or face sanctions for not earning equivalent of 35 hours per week. How can a person get a second job to prevent sanctions when hours are not set and can be reduced at Tesco’s whim?
Pros
Staff discount
Cons
Hours set according to employers business needs not reliable for employee.

Good colleagues bad management
Home Shopper (Former Employee) - Buckinghamshire - 26 January 2023
Worked in home shopping. Hours were good if you have a family. Management tend to treat you as an after thought unless you are constantly putting yourself out for them. Your face has to fit to progress.
Pros
Discouts
Cons
Non supportive management

Good place to work
Customer Assistant (Former Employee) - Consett, Durham - 26 January 2023
Was a good place to work whilst I was studying. I stocked the shelves and was occasionally put on checkouts. My favourite time to work was Sundays 4pm- midnight as store was closed so could just get straight on with work

Tesco is a very good place to work with especially when you still young. The pay rate is good compared to other companies and the management are helpful.

Management were awful
Customer Service Assistant (Current Employee) - Widnes, Cheshire - 26 January 2023
Worked at Tesco for over a year and a half and every year, in January, they cut over time due to the managers wanting a bigger February payday bonus. The only good thing about working there is that I consider 90% of the staff good friends. The other 10% must have dirt on the managers as they leave when they want and/or do barely anything on shift and the managers just give them a light slap on the wrist. If you are lazy and don’t care about where you work this store is perfect for you!

It’s okay
Customer Assistant (Former Employee) - Streatham, Greater London - 25 January 2023
Very fast paced job but not too bad of an environment to work in. Pay is only somewhat good when you do overtime or night shift. Pretty decent job if it’s your first job though

Decent company to work for, especially if you are part-time / a student.
Customer Assistant (Current Employee) - Perth, Perth and Kinross - 25 January 2023
I've worked for them for 8 years, through my uni degree and I would definitely recommend them as a good place to work part time. I think your experience in Tesco will be a mixed bag depending on which store you work in and what your management is like, but the majority of my time working for them has been positive. The work isn't difficult and the pay is decent for what you are doing, and I've always had supportive management for the most part. Good place to work if you need flexible hours too.
