There are some great supports, e.g. from some of the academic staff and the student counselling service. But PhD needs and issues are often not prioritised

Very tedious but handy money
Call Centre Agent (Former Employee) - Dublin, County Dublin - 2 May 2023
After the 3-4 hour shifts, I was so tired. It’s a tedious job to say the least but it’s easy money for when you’re studying. The staff were all very kind.

Great colleagues, but subject to same issues all Universities
Post-doctoral Research Fellow (Current Employee) - Dublin, County Dublin - 17 August 2022
I really enjoyed working at UCD as a postdoc. I had a very supportive supervisor and the atmosphere on campus is generally good. Having said that, working from home since the pandemic seems to be eroding the university culture and postdocs have all the same issues regarding job security as those at other Universities.

Busy but fun
Services Officer (Former Employee) - DUBLIN - 7 June 2022
Well supported in the position but very little recognition for going above and beyond for the role. Still a good place to work and an excellent training ground to move to other departments.
Pros
Career progression
Cons
Poor communication

Was fun until the pandemic
Senior Caller (Current Employee) - Tierney Building - 31 May 2020
It was nice as you could choose your hours so it fitted nicely around college work. However, they began to take advantage of us when the pandemic hit and started to lie so not the best place to be under pressure

Self motivating work
Assistant Professor (Current Employee) - Belfield, County Dublin - 13 May 2020
It's easy to have a work and life balance.
It's easy to loose motivation and direction.
It gives people freedom to do project and research they are interested in.
However, the management and career plan are really poor

Depends on what department you are in.
Tutor and Assistant to Lecturer (Former Employee) - Dublin - 11 February 2020
Work as Tutor there is engaging and staff are helpful. It all depends on what department you are in as the work is only part time and pay is not enough to live on.

Collaborative
Teaching Assistant (Current Employee) - Dublin - 31 January 2020
I work as a teaching assistant in UCD. The lecturers associated with the module are extremely helpful. The job it can be difficult to engage first years in particular with the material.

Productive
Invigilating Staff (Former Employee) - Dublin - 27 November 2019
My work was par time. So I was not entirely dependent on this very salary. For other permanent or long term contract based jobs, I would advise that it is a really warm and relaxed workplace.

Lucky to be on a great team.
Digital journalist / content officer (Former Employee) - Dublin - 14 January 2019
I was on a small team that had high standards and outperformed expectations but I don't believe my experience was the norm. Pay was higher than most corporate roles at the same level and hours were totally reasonable. There are a lot of black holes where you wouldn't want to find yourself but, if you get the right position with the right people, it's a good place to distinguish yourself. If you are looking for a cushy public sector job, you can certainly live that life at UCD. However, why would you want that for yourself? And as a UCD graduate and former employee, I would ask that you give more than that.
Pros
Salary, work-life balance, usual public sector protections and benefits
Cons
Low staff turnover means fewer opportunities to progress, location means routine can get repetitive, culture at the top doesn't pass down well
