This is a discrete manufacturing automation role, designing, building and commissioning automated cells, robotics and PLC-controlled equipment from concept through to validated production. It is NOT a process-control, DCS, SIS/functional-safety or instrumentation & calibration (I&C) position.

The Role

Syntech are working with a large medical device manufacturer building the automated production lines behind life-changing products. We are looking for an experienced Automation Engineer to take projects from concept through to validated production — designing and delivering automated cells, robotics and PLC-controlled equipment in a regulated environment.

You will own automation projects end to end: architecture, build, integration, testing, validation and handover, working hands-on with the robots, PLCs and cells rather than at arm's length.

What You'll Do

• Design, build and commission automated manufacturing cells and equipment — improving safety, quality, capacity and efficiency, from concept to commissioning
• Program and integrate robotic systems (Universal Robots and/or equivalent) into production cells
• Program, troubleshoot and optimise PLC-controlled equipment on the line
• Lead automation projects through concept, build, testing, validation and handover
• Develop control architectures, electrical schematics and functional specifications
• Support IQ/OQ/PQ activities to medical device regulatory standards
• Work with Manufacturing, Quality and Validation teams on continuous improvement

Essential

• Degree in Automation, Mechatronics, Electrical, Mechanical Engineering or similar
• 5+ years in automation engineering within a manufacturing environment
• Proven hands-on design and build of automated manufacturing cells (concept to commissioning) — not process-plant capital projects, and not maintenance/support of existing lines alone
• Strong PLC programming on at least one major platform (Allen-Bradley, Siemens or Beckhoff)
• Hands-on robot programming and integration (Universal Robots ideal; Fanuc / ABB / KUKA / Yaskawa considered where UR cross-training is realistic)
• Solid grounding in machine safety standards and risk assessments (e.g. EN ISO 13849, Machinery Directive)
• Experience in medical device, pharma, life sciences or a similarly regulated (GMP/FDA) manufacturing environment

Nice to Have

• Mobile Industrial Robots (MiR) programming and support
• Industrial vision, servo, pneumatics and motion control
• Validation protocols (IQ/OQ/PQ) and MES integration
• GMP / FDA-regulated experience
• Project management delivering automation on time and to budget
