Full job description

About the role

We are recruiting on behalf of one of our clients who is bringing its accounting function in-house, moving away from its current outsourced provider. This role owns the day-to-day finance function across both Irish and UK operations keeping the books accurate, compliant, and audit-ready while working alongside a part-time senior accountant who visits monthly to review, sign off, and provide oversight.

Key Responsibilities

  • Transactional bookkeeping: purchase and sales ledger management, bank reconciliations, processing invoices, expenses, and payments across Irish and UK entities/accounts.
  • Cashflow management: building and maintaining cashflow forecasts, monitoring incoming/outgoing funds, and flagging shortfalls or risks early.
  • Payroll support: processing or liaising with payroll providers, ensuring accurate and timely payment of staff under both Irish (Revenue/PAYE) and UK (HMRC/PAYE) requirements as applicable.
  • Tax & VAT compliance: preparing and filing Irish VAT returns (VAT3) in line with Irish Revenue rules, preparing and filing UK VAT returns in line with HMRC and Making Tax Digital (MTD) requirements, handling cross-border VAT treatment (e.g. distance selling, OSS/IOSS where relevant to e-commerce/fulfilment activity, post-Brexit UK EU VAT rules) and staying current on Irish and UK corporation tax obligations, liaising with the senior accountant on filings.
  • Month-end processes: preparing accounts to trial balance stage ahead of the senior accountant's visit, accruals, prepayments, and journal entries.
  • Credit control: chasing outstanding customer payments and managing supplier payment terms.
  • Reporting: producing regular financial reports/management accounts for company leadership.
  • System ownership: managing day-to-day bookkeeping software (e.g. Xero/QuickBooks/Sage), maintaining clean, well-organised records for both jurisdictions.
  • Liaison: acting as the main point of contact for the senior accountant during monthly visits, preparing everything needed for review and sign-off.
  • Handover management: supporting the transition of records and processes away from the outgoing provider.

Experience & Skills

  • Proven bookkeeping experience (3+ years), ideally with some autonomy/ownership of the ledger.
  • Working knowledge of both Irish Revenue and UK HMRC tax/VAT rules — essential given the company's cross-border trading; experience with post-Brexit VAT treatment (OSS/IOSS, distance selling thresholds) highly valued.
  • Experience with Irish and/or UK payroll compliance.
  • Comfortable working independently with periodic senior oversight rather than daily supervision.
  • Strong Excel/spreadsheet skills; confident with cloud accounting software.
  • Experience with cashflow forecasting is a strong plus.
  • Experience in e-commerce, logistics, or fulfilment would be an advantage.
  • Discreet and trustworthy — this person will have full visibility of company finances.
  • Good communicator — able to flag issues proactively rather than waiting for the monthly review.

What Success Looks Like

  • Books are always current and accurate between senior accountant visits.
  • Irish and UK VAT/tax filings are on time and fully compliant.
  • Cashflow forecast is a living, reliable tool for the business.
  • Monthly sign-off visits run smoothly with minimal surprises.
  • A smooth, clean transition away from the outgoing provider.

Benefits:

  • Company pension
  • On-site parking

Work Location: In person
