Mechanical & Electrical Consulting Engineer

We are seeking an experienced Mechanical & Electrical (M&E) Consulting Engineer to join our team, working on residential projects across Ireland.

About the Role

You'll provide M&E consulting engineering services across residential developments, working closely with design teams, contractors, and clients to deliver compliant, high-quality building services solutions.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and coordinate mechanical and electrical building services systems for residential and mixed-use developments from concept through detailed design, construction, and handover.
• Prepare high-quality M&E design drawings, calculations, specifications, schedules, technical reports, and tender documentation in accordance with project requirements and applicable standards.
• Carry out the design and coordination of building services including HVAC, domestic water services, drainage, electrical power distribution, lighting, emergency lighting, fire alarm systems, ventilation, renewable energy systems, and associated infrastructure.
• Work closely with architects, structural engineers, civil engineers, contractors, utility providers, and other consultants to ensure coordinated and buildable M&E solutions.
• Review architectural and structural information and identify spatial, technical, and coordination requirements affecting building services design.
• Attend design team meetings, technical workshops, client meetings, and site coordination meetings, providing clear engineering input and resolving design and construction issues.
• Undertake site inspections, surveys, snagging, progress reviews, and construction-stage technical support to ensure installations are completed in accordance with the design intent, specifications, and relevant standards.
• Review contractor technical submissions, drawings, product data, RFIs, proposed alternatives, and specialist designs, and provide appropriate technical responses.
• Coordinate M&E services using Revit, AutoCAD, and BIM workflows, ensuring models and drawings are accurate, coordinated, and suitable for project delivery.
• Carry out model reviews, clash detection, and interdisciplinary coordination to identify and resolve design conflicts before construction.
• Support the development and implementation of company design standards, specifications, calculation templates, BIM procedures, and standard operating procedures.
• Ensure designs comply with applicable Irish Building Regulations, Technical Guidance Documents, relevant EN/BS standards, client requirements, utility requirements, and industry best practice.
• Provide input into energy efficiency, sustainability, Part L compliance, low-carbon design, heat pumps, EV charging, renewable technologies, and climate-related design requirements where applicable.
• Manage assigned projects and design packages, ensuring deliverables are completed accurately and within agreed programme requirements.
• Identify opportunities to improve engineering workflows, standardisation, automation, model quality, and overall project delivery.
• Support junior engineers, BIM technicians, and design team members through technical guidance, design reviews, and mentoring.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Building Services Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
• Proven experience working as a Mechanical & Electrical Consulting Engineer / Building Services Engineer within a consulting engineering or multidisciplinary design environment.
• Strong understanding of mechanical and electrical building services design principles and coordination requirements.
• Good working knowledge of Irish Building Regulations, Technical Guidance Documents, relevant British/European Standards, and industry codes of practice.
• Strong technical design, problem-solving, communication, and stakeholder-management skills.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary design team.
• Proficiency in AutoCAD.
• Experience with Autodesk Revit and BIM coordination.
• Experience with engineering design and calculation software would be an advantage.

Experience

• Minimum 5 -10 years’ relevant experience in the design and delivery of mechanical and electrical building services projects.
• Strong experience within the Irish residential sector, including apartments, housing developments, mixed-use schemes, and associated site infrastructure.
• Demonstrable experience producing coordinated M&E designs from early-stage concept through detailed construction documentation.
• Strong mechanical building services experience including heating, ventilation, domestic water services, drainage, heat pumps, plant systems, and energy-efficient design.
• Strong electrical building services experience including power distribution, lighting, emergency lighting, fire alarm systems, containment, EV charging, and associated electrical infrastructure.
• Experience coordinating services with architectural, structural, civil, and specialist design teams.
• Experience reviewing contractor submissions, responding to RFIs, carrying out site inspections, and resolving construction-stage technical issues.
• Familiarity with project collaboration and Common Data Environment platforms such as BIM 360 / Autodesk Construction Cloud, Aconex, and Procore.
• Experience communicating directly with clients, architects, contractors, utility providers, and other external stakeholders.
• Proactive, organised, and commercially aware, with the ability to manage priorities across multiple projects and meet demanding project deadlines.
