Driver Apprentice Program – Job Description

(Waste Recycling/Sustainable Energy Industry)

Overview

We are offering a structured Driver Apprentice Program designed to develop future professional HGV Drivers within our waste management operations. Apprentices will begin their journey working as Helpers on the back of our collection vehicles, gaining hands‑on experience with daily routes, waste handling, safety procedures, and customer service. As skills progress, apprentices will transition into driving responsibilities with full training and licence support provided once they have successfully passed their probation.

We offer Monday to Friday with occasional Saturday work and a basic pay of €33,767 per annum. You will have plenty of opportunity to work overtime with a higher hourly rate after completion of your basic 45 hour week. Your lunch time is paid; you will be in receipt of weekly pay and a generous holiday entitlement and subsistence. It doesn’t end there, we offer 3% bonus, a 3% pension contribution, subsidized bin service, bike to work scheme and further education assistance. We have a modern fleet and will provide training and full PPE.

Key Responsibilities

  • Participate in training, assessments, and progress reviews as part of the apprentice program to become a HGV Driver.
  • Work as a Helper on the back of waste collection trucks
  • Assist drivers with safe and efficient collection of waste and recycling bins
  • Operate bin‑lifting and related equipment safely
  • Support the crew with route completion and customer service
  • Follow all health and safety procedures and wear required PPE
  • Maintain a clean and safe working environment around the vehicle
  • Communicate effectively with the driver and crew throughout daily operations
  • Participate in training, assessments, and progress reviews as part of the apprentice program

Training and Development

We provide a structured pathway to becoming a fully qualified HGV Driver:

Stage 1 – Helper Role

  • Learn daily operations from the ground up
  • Understand vehicle safety, route planning, and waste-handling procedures
  • Gain practical knowledge of the waste management industry

Stage 2 – Licence Progression

We fully fund the following upon successful completion of probation:

  • Category B licence (if not already held)
  • Category C licence training
  • Driver CPC/CPL training and required modules

Stage 3 – Driver Development

  • Transition into supervised driving
  • Receive on-the-job training with experienced drivers
  • Complete CPC requirements and move into full operational driving duties
