BHP Laboratories Ltd is in the analytical chemistry business since 1978. We employ 110 people in our Limerick laboratory. Our customers come from many different industries and depend on us for reliable measurements and advice.

Overview: The role assumes support for the effective and professional day-to-day management of clients’ requirements. In doing so, this role requires exceptional attention to detail and strong communication and organizational skills. This role will provide support for the wider Analytical Chemistry Laboratory and its team but in particular in reporting directly to the Laboratory Operations Manager and Laboratory Technical Manager.

Roles, Duties and Responsibility

You will work as an analytical chemist in our Analytical Chemistry service.

Your duties will be as follows:
Study Protocols:

You will study existing protocols for preparing test samples and measuring composition and properties.

Receive consignments of laboratory samples:

You will be responsible for the security and integrity of samples arriving into the laboratory. The samples will contain water, waste water, leachate, sludge, soil, aggregate, solvent, fine chemicals, fuel, oil, food ingredients, metals and polymers, air borne particles and gases and air emissions from stacks and process vents.

Prepare test samples:

You will prepare test samples using a variety of techniques including digestion, liquid-liquid extraction, solid-phase extraction, dilution, evaporation and combustion.

Do laboratory measurements:

You will measure the composition and properties of test samples using a variety of basic analytical techniques.

Write reports

You will prepare written reports on your work.

Management

You will report to both the Technical and Operation Manager of the Analytical Chemistry service.

Qualifications and experience

Lab Technicians must have a solid foundation in science subjects such as biology, physics and chemistry. They must have a university degree, apprenticeship or school leaving certificates. Previous experience as a Lab Assistant can be beneficial.
