Applications are invited for the position of:
Medical Laboratory Assistant
A vacancy has arisen within the Laboratory Department for the position of Medical Laboratory Assistant in Specimen Reception/Microbiology. This is a permanent full-time role, 37 hours per week.
The Role:
Assist laboratory staff with pre-sample analysis of blood specimens.
Set up of Microbiological specimens
Prepare and use equipment as directed by appropriate scientific/ technical laboratory staff.
Receive and record specimens on LIS, ensuring that samples and request forms are correctly matched.
File and store samples as required and maintain records.
Scanning, archiving and retrieval of documents
Dispatch and delivery of specimens to referral laboratories as required.
Management of laboratory waste.
Cleaning of laboratory and laboratory equipment as required.
Stock management - reporting stock shortages to senior laboratory staff and requesting stocks as appropriate.
Assisting with filing of specimens, slides etc.
Taking, recording and delivering phone messages as required.
Recording of data on the laboratory/hospital computer system to include: patient data entry; production of bar-coded labels.
Completion of daily check lists.
Other appropriate duties as may be assigned from time to time by the Hospital.
The Candidate:
Relevant Scientific Qualification (BSc in Biomedical or related Science) - desirable
Previous experience in a similar role
Professional approach to work
Good communication, organisational and team skills
Flexibility in work practice - this role will involve working weekend hours.
