Full job description

The Schoolhouse Hotel & Gastrobar

Food & Beverage Supervisor

Day and Evening Shifts Available

Northumberland Road, Ballsbridge, Dublin 4

€15.50 – €17.00 per hour | 39 hours per week | Full-time, permanent

About The Schoolhouse

Originally built in 1859, our historic Victorian building in the heart of Ballsbridge has been a Dublin landmark for generations, and our canal-side setting still stops people in their tracks.

We are a 4-star boutique hotel with 31 character-filled bedrooms and a busy, well-regarded gastrobar. We are not corporate and we are not pretentious. We are guided by honesty, fairness and loyalty — we believe in looking after the people who look after us.

The Role

We are looking for an experienced Food & Beverage Supervisor to lead our floor and bar team shift by shift. This is a hands-on role for someone who is already confident running a service, and who wants the responsibility of being the person the team looks to when the room is full.

You will report to the Food & Beverage Manager or General Manager and work closely with our Head Chef and kitchen team. You will not be expected to run budgets or manage the department . Your job is to make each shift run well: right people in the right places, standards held, guests looked after, and problems solved before they grow.

If you have been supervising for a while and want a place where your contribution is actually noticed, we would like to hear from you.

Shift Patterns — One Role, Two Options

We are recruiting for this role on both day and evening shifts. Tell us in your application which pattern suits you, and we will agree and confirm your pattern in writing before you start.

  • Day shift: 7.00am – 3.00pm, or 6.45am – 2.00pm — breakfast, brunch and lunch service
  • Evening shift: 5.00pm until close — dinner service, bar trade and close-down

Shifts include weekends and public holidays on a rota basis. Some flexibility across both patterns is welcome but is not a requirement of the role.

What You'll Do

Run the Shift

  • Be the senior person on the floor for your service — visible, energetic, positive organised and approachable
  • Brief the team at the start of service so everyone knows their section and the day's specials
  • Allocate sections, manage the pass, and keep service flowing when it gets busy
  • Complete opening or closing checklists in full, including cash-up and secure close-down on evenings
  • Hand over clearly to the next shift so nothing falls through the cracks

Look After Our Guests

  • Set the tone for warm, professional service by the way you do it yourself
  • Greet and look after guests personally, especially regulars and residents
  • Handle complaints calmly and resolve what you can on the spot, escalating anything serious
  • Keep an eye on reservations and covers through OpenTable so the room runs smoothly

Support the Team

  • Train and coach new and junior team members on the job
  • Give clear, fair feedback in the moment, and flag performance concerns to the F&B Manager
  • Help build a supportive team culture where people want to turn up and do well
  • Support rostering by flagging cover gaps early

Keep Standards High

  • Maintain presentation and cleanliness across the bar, restaurant and public areas
  • Carry out stock counts, monitor wastage, and flag ordering needs to the F&B Manager
  • Check deliveries against orders and report any shortfalls
  • Report maintenance issues promptly so they get fixed

Work Safely and Correctly

  • Follow our food safety and HACCP procedures, and complete the records that go with them
  • Follow health and safety and licensing requirements, including responsible service of alcohol
  • Follow our tips and gratuities policy, which operates in line with the Payment of Wages (Amendment) (Tips and Gratuities) Act 2022
  • Record hours worked and breaks accurately for yourself and your team

What We're Looking For

Essential

  • 1- 2 years in a supervisory role in a busy bar, restaurant, Gastrobar or hotel F&B operation
  • Confident running a full service and directing a team on the floor
  • Strong food and drink knowledge, and genuine interest in getting better at it
  • Good spoken and written English, and the ability to communicate clearly with a diverse team
  • Legal entitlement to work in Ireland

Useful, But Not Essential

  • Experience with OpenTable, Volante or similar systems
  • Barista skills or cocktail experience
  • Experience of breakfast and brunch service at volume (for the day shift)
  • Experience supporting events or private functions

Who You Are

  • Calm under pressure and steady when the room is full
  • Reliable — you turn up, on time, ready
  • Someone people want to work for: fair, clear, dynamic and encouraging
  • Detail-oriented, with pride in how the room looks and how service feels
  • Comfortable making a decision and standing over it

What's In It For You

  • Clear pay: €15.50 – €17.00 per hour depending on experience, reviewed at the end of probation
  • Predictable hours: a genuine 39-hour contract with a defined shift pattern, agreed in writing before you start

Pay: €15.50-€17.00 per hour

Expected hours: 20.0 – 39.0 per week

Benefits:

  • Bike to work scheme
  • Food allowance

Experience:

  • Hospitality management: 1 year (required)

Work authorisation:

  • Ireland (required)

Location:

  • DUBLIN 4, County Dublin (preferred)

Work Location: In person
