Enfer Medical is a private clinical laboratory for the examination of human samples with the purpose of providing information for the diagnosis, management, prevention and treatment of disease. The vision of Enfer Medical is to provide rapid, accessible, quality services for investigation of human infection and disease. This diagnostic and screening service supports the vision, set out in the government’s strategy for the future of healthcare in Ireland, to expand community-based patient care and to focus on national preventative screening programs. Enfer Medical is a patient centered diagnostic service committed to supporting continued patient care.
Scope of the role
We are seeking a Senior Medical Scientist – Haematology (Part Time) specialising in Blood Morphology. The role of the Senior medical scientist is to carry out a range of scientific tests on human samples to help clinicians diagnose and treat diseases. You will be expected to work, in co-operation with the Medical Director and laboratory management, as part of a team in the provision of diagnostic laboratory services in accordance with company policies. You will actively contribute to the operation of a quality management system in compliance with ISO15189 INAB standards and co-operate with the Chief of Department, Laboratory Manager and with other senior personnel in training staff as required.
Roles and Responsibilities
· Perform diagnostic laboratory work to the highest standards, and in accordance with laboratory standard operating procedures. Exercise a professional duty of care to patients and service users.
· Process patient samples in good time and make sure that turnaround times for reporting results are achieved.
· Maintain professional competency to work in accordance with the laboratory management system and act impartially and ethically in the discharge of duties.
· Observe the strictest confidence when dealing with all aspects of patient information.
· To treat patients, their personal data and their samples with due care and respect.
· Discharge duties in accordance with laboratory policies and be responsible for the quality of that work.
· Monitor and interpret quality, standards, accuracy of results, and participate in troubleshooting to resolve abnormalities, anomalies and variations in results.
· Participate in the introduction of new ideas and methods, in co-operation with the laboratory management and according to organisational goals.
· Actively participate in internal and external quality control and quality assurance programmes and co-operate in evaluating assays, equipment and consumables where required.
· Participate in the training of staff as required.
· To comply with Health and Safety requirements as detailed in the Safety Statement and associated policies and procedures and to report any defects or tasks being carried out in an unsafe manner.
· Be able to recognise, manage and contain biohazards encountered in clinical laboratories, including biological, chemical and physical hazards, and apply appropriate safety legislation, guidelines, monitoring and risk assessment procedures to ensure safety of service users, colleagues, and the environment.
· Participate in a personal development planning process, which forms the basis for the staff annual joint review meeting with the line manager.
· Perform additional responsibilities as assigned by Chief / Manager.
Qualifications and Experience
· Degree in Biomedical / Medical Science
· Relevant qualification equivalent to NFQ level 8 on the National Framework of Qualifications Ireland as determined by NARIC Ireland qualifications database.
· Postgraduate qualification equivalent to NFQ level 9 on the National Framework of Qualifications Ireland preferred.
· At least 5 years experience in blood morphology in a clinical diagnostic laboratory or research laboratory or employed in a company supplying services related to clinical science and laboratory medicine.
· Be registered on the Medical Scientists Register maintained by the Medical Scientists Registration Board at CORU
· Eligible for membership of the relevant professional body e.g. ACSLM
· Demonstrates a good understanding of diagnostic laboratory processes and services and relevant quality standards.
· Good understanding of ISO15189.
· Able to work both independently and as part of a team.
· Good analytical, critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
