Full job description

About McElhinneys:

Located in the heart of County Donegal, McElhinneys is an award-winning, family-owned premium department store with a rich heritage and a forward-thinking approach to retail. We offer a world-class shopping experience both in-store and online, housing an extensive curation of brands in women’s, men’s and kid’s fashion, footwear, lingerie, beauty, homeware, bags and jewellery.

As we continue to scale our digital footprint, we are seeking a highly commercial and strategic E-commerce Manager to lead our online business. As an independent, family-owned business, we offer the agility, autonomy, and entrepreneurial spirit that will allow the right person to make an immediate and rewarding impact.

The Role:

We are looking for a commercially driven E-commerce Manager to take ownership of the McElhinneys online store. You will be responsible for driving digital revenue, optimising the customer journey, and managing our Shopify Plus platform.

The ideal candidate will possess a strong trading mentality. You should instinctively know how to leverage data, recognise trading opportunities, understand digital marketing, and user experience (UX) strategies to increase conversion rates, average order value (AOV), and customer retention.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Commercial Trading: Take full ownership of the e-commerce P&L. Develop and execute the digital trading calendar, ensuring alignment with in-store promotions, seasonal launches, and key retail events (e.g., Black Friday, Christmas).
  • Platform Management: Lead the day-to-day management and continuous optimisation of our Shopify Plus platform and online operations. Act as the primary point of contact for external development agencies. Ensuring the monthly SLA and roadmap for site enhancements and app integrations are carried out.
  • Integrations, AI, and platform optimisation: Solid understanding of integrations and AI technologies. An awareness of ecommerce trends that could be deployed to enhance efficiency, profitability, and UX.
  • Customer Experience (UX/UI): Continuously monitor site performance and user behaviour. Implement A/B testing and conversion rate optimisation (CRO) strategies to ensure a frictionless, premium shopping experience on mobile and desktop. Strong collaboration skills required to connect with marketing and customer service teams.
  • Site Merchandising: Ensure intuitive site navigation, fast load speeds and mobile optimisation.
  • Digital Marketing & Acquisition: Work closely with the marketing team and external agencies to drive profitable traffic across SEO, PPC, and social channels.
  • Retention & CRM: Establish an email marketing and SMS strategy, creating automated lifecycle journeys and segmented campaigns to maximise customer lifetime value (CLV).
  • Inventory & Visual Merchandising: Collaborate with buying and merchandising teams to ensure the right product mix is available online. Ensure online visual merchandising is optimised and different strategies and blends deployed.
  • Fulfilment: Oversee operational fulfilment targets and implement data-led strategies to minimise return rates, ensuring efficiency while maintaining the highest standards of customer satisfaction.
  • Data & Reporting: Utilise analytics, and other reporting tools to provide weekly commercial insights and actionable recommendations to the senior leadership team.
  • Team Leadership: Mentor, manage, and develop a high-performing e-commerce and digital content team, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and commercial awareness.

What We Are Looking For:

  • Experience: A minimum of 5 years of experience in an e-commerce management or senior digital trading role, preferably within the fashion, beauty, or department store sector.
  • On Site: Must be present in our business, based in Ballybofey, Co. Donegal. Option to work remotely 1 day a week may be an option for the right candidate after a period of 6 months in employment.
  • Platform Expertise: Hands-on experience managing and scaling a highly transactional Shopify Plus store is essential. Experience with alternative ecommerce platforms will be considered for the right candidate.
  • Partnerships: Strong management skills when dealing with website and app partners to ensure good working relationships, continually optimised services and securing cost-effective pricing for McElhinneys.
  • Commercial Acumen: Must be a "commercial thinker" who makes data-led decisions. A relentless focus on trading, profitability, margin protection, and achieving sales targets.
  • Analytical Skills: Strong proficiency in e-commerce trading metrics (Conversion Rate, AOV, CAC, ROAS, LTV, etc.)
  • Team Leadership: Proven experience in managing and inspiring a team to achieve their fullest potential along with strong cross-team communication abilities.
  • Mindset: Entrepreneurial and adaptable. Thrive in a fast-paced environment and possess the agility required to succeed in a dynamic, family-owned business.
  • Problem Solving: Proactively identifying friction points in the customer journey and quickly deploying effective solutions.

Why Join Us?

  • The opportunity to take the reins of a highly successful, established e-commerce platform and drive its next phase of growth.
  • Join an award winning website – Voted Ireland’s Large Online Retailer of the Year 2025.
  • A collaborative, welcoming, and autonomous working environment in Irelands leading family-owned department store.
  • Competitive salary and performance-related bonus structure.
  • Generous staff discount across all departments including fashion, beauty, and homeware.
