Job Title: Medical Laboratory/Data Entry Assistant

Department: Microbiology

Hours: 37 hours per week

Job Type: Specific Purpose Contract - 6 Months


Role Purpose

  • Perform as part of a team within the relevant department and throughout the laboratory to ensure the Laboratory delivers a quality service to the Users of the service.
  • Work towards meeting the quality objectives of the Laboratory and the Blackrock Clinic as directed by the Chief Medical Scientist.
  • Personally, and professionally, you are accountable to the patient. You are personally accountable for your own actions at all times.


Key Responsibilities

  • Assist laboratory scientific staff in the performance of pathology examinations as determined by the Chief Medical Scientist and under the supervision of a qualified medical scientist.
  • Prepare and label samples for testing and analysis.
  • Be familiar with the LIS and enter patient details and coded test information into the laboratory computer system in an accurate and expeditious manner.
  • Have knowledge of laboratory terminology and procedures.
  • Follow policies, procedures and guidelines in accordance with the quality management system of the laboratory.
  • Be responsible for correct sample handling, identification and registration where appropriate.
  • Perform work in a timely accurate and safe manner.
  • Maintain a safe environment for yourself and colleagues as determined by the laboratory Health & Safety policy.
  • Dispose of laboratory waste safely and appropriately.
  • Record and deliver telephone messages according to the laboratory telephone policy.
  • Perform routine equipment maintenance and maintain records according to protocol.
  • Be flexible and adapt to changing workloads.
  • Follow good laboratory practice and work to ISO 15189 standards at all times.
  • Participate in competency and proficiency testing programmes.
  • As requested, participate in the stock control and batch acceptance procedure of the department.
  • Ensure the prompt and adequate reporting of laboratory incidents according to the Quality Management System policies.


Communication Skills

  • Communicate appropriately with colleagues and other members of the health care team, recording all urgent communications according to hospital and laboratory policies.
  • Recognise self-limitations and seek assistance when required.
  • Attend and contribute in staff meetings and team briefing.

  • Set annual goals and objectives with Chief Medical Scientists.
  • Continue to develop personal knowledge and skills.
  • Seek and take education opportunities in addition to those provided by the hospital.
  • Participate in departmental audits and actively contribute to the attainment and maintenance of accreditation to ISO 15189 and JCI standards
  • Present a professional appearance and be punctual.
  • You must comply with all hospital policies in relation to Infection Prevention and Control.
