Full job description

The Mater Private Network is seeking a dedicated and forward-thinking Basic Grade Medical Physicist to join our Radiotherapy Physics team at the Mid-Western Regional Oncology Centre in Limerick.

This role offers an excellent opportunity to engage in all aspects of clinical radiation physics within a supportive, multidisciplinary team. You will be actively involved in treatment planning, quality assurance, equipment calibration, and radiation safety, while contributing to the clinical implementation of cutting-edge radiotherapy techniques and technologies.


Key Responsibilities

  • Clinical Radiation Physics: Provide comprehensive medical physics support for all therapeutic and imaging applications of ionising radiation.
  • Treatment Planning & Consultation: Perform and verify treatment plans for routine modalities, manage planning workflows, and advise Radiation Oncologists on necessary modifications.
  • Quality Assurance & Calibration: Conduct routine QA measurements, data analysis, and calibrations on treatment delivery equipment, imaging systems, and patient dosimetry devices.
  • Commissioning & Innovation: Participate in acceptance testing, commissioning of new equipment, and the implementation of advanced clinical protocols and procedures.
  • Education & Safety: Deliver radiation safety training and educational support across clinical, scientific, and technical disciplines within the department.
  • Research & Development: Engage in clinical audits, risk management, and departmental research projects, with opportunities to present work at national and international forums.


What We Are Looking For

Education & Qualifications:

  • A recognised first or second-class honours degree (NFQ Level 8) with Physical Science taken as a major subject.
  • A recognised postgraduate degree (NFQ Level 9 or above) in Medical Physics, or an equivalent recognised qualification.
  • Previous experience working as a radiotherapy physicist is highly desirable.

Professional Knowledge & Skills:

  • Strong fundamental understanding of the physics principles underpinning medical physics practice.
  • Knowledge of radiotherapy delivery systems, external beam treatment planning, and modern quality assurance methods.
  • Familiarity with risk assessment, radiation safety procedures, and relevant regulatory frameworks (HIQA, EPA, JCI).
  • Excellent IT, communication, and organisational skills, with a proven ability to prioritise tasks in a busy clinical environment.
  • A strong commitment to patient-centred care and continuous professional development.
