Job Title: Team Lead – Chromatography Laboratory
Location: Limerick

Position Summary:

The Team Lead – Chromatography Laboratory is responsible for overseeing daily operations and supervising a team of analysts within the chromatography section of a contract testing laboratory. This role ensures that testing services provided to pharmaceutical and medical device clients are delivered with high quality, in full compliance with applicable regulatory standards (e.g., cGMP, ISO 17025), and within project timelines. The Team Lead will be a subject matter expert in chromatographic techniques (e.g., HPLC, GC, GC-MS, IC), manage resources, support client communications, and help drive continuous improvement initiatives.

Overview

The Laboratory Team Lead is responsible for the effective, compliant, and efficient day-to-day operation of the Laboratory. This role combines strong technical expertise with leadership responsibility, ensuring that client requirements are delivered to a high standard while maintaining quality, safety, and operational performance.

The Team Lead will oversee laboratory workflows, manage and develop staff, and act as a key point of contact for clients and internal stakeholders. The role works closely with the Laboratory Operations Manager and Laboratory Technical Manager, with responsibility for translating strategic objectives into daily laboratory activities.

Key Responsibilities

Laboratory Operations and Scheduling

Plan, prioritise, and schedule laboratory work to ensure timely delivery of results.

Oversee day-to-day laboratory operations, ensuring efficient use of resources and staff.

Monitor workloads and adjust plans to meet changing client and operational demands.

Team Leadership and Supervision

Supervise and support Senior and Junior Analytical Chemists.

Allocate work, monitor performance, and ensure accountability across the team.

Provide coaching, mentoring, and performance feedback.

Training and Competency

Identify training needs and coordinate development plans for laboratory staff.

Ensure all personnel are trained, competent, and compliant with laboratory procedures and accreditation requirements.

Workflow and Process Management

Develop, implement, and continuously improve laboratory workflows and processes.

Identify inefficiencies and implement solutions to improve turnaround times and productivity.

Customer and Commercial Support

Act as a key point of contact for client enquiries.

Review and prepare technical quotations in collaboration with management.

Build and maintain strong client relationships, ensuring high levels of customer satisfaction.

Reporting and Data Oversight

Oversee the review and approval of analytical results and test reports.

Ensure reports are accurate, clear, and delivered within agreed timelines.

Quality and Compliance

Ensure adherence to laboratory quality systems (e.g. ISO 17025) and regulatory requirements.

Support audit preparation and participate in external assessments (e.g. INAB, customer audits).

Drive corrective and preventive actions and promote a culture of continuous improvement.

Laboratory Management

Oversee laboratory resources including stock control, certified reference materials (CRMs), and consumables.

Ensure proper management of facilities, equipment, and environmental conditions.

Maintain accurate laboratory records, including stock cards and inventory systems.

Management

Reports to the Laboratory Operations Manager and Laboratory Technical Manager.

Provides direct supervision to Senior and Junior Analytical Chemists.

Qualifications and Experience

Degree in Chemistry or a related scientific discipline.

Significant experience in an analytical laboratory environment (typically 5+ years).

Strong understanding of laboratory operations, workflow management, and quality systems (e.g. ISO 17025).

Proven leadership and team management experience.

Experience in client interaction, quotations, and service delivery.

Excellent organisational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
