Job Title: Automation Engineer (PLC & Robotics)

Location: Ireland

1. Role Overview

We are seeking an experienced, hands-on Automation Engineer with strong PLC and robotics programming experience to design, develop, and deliver software-driven automation systems across GMP-regulated industries, food, and FMCG.

This is a technical execution role which could lead to a Technical Leadership Role. The successful candidate will be actively involved in programming, commissioning, and deploying automation systems from concept through to FAT/SAT.

The role requires the ability to translate customer requirements (URS) into robust, scalable, and standardised control systems aligned with Machinelab engineering approach.

2. Key Responsibilities

2.1 Software & Controls Engineering

  • Design and implement machine control logic and automation sequences
  • Integrate industrial robots (e.g. Fanuc, ABB, KUKA, UR) into automated systems
  • Commission and optimise machines during FAT and SAT
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex control and system issues on-site
  • Develop reusable code libraries and standardised function blocks
  • A technical point of contact for customers through project lifecycle

2.2 System Integration & Delivery

  • Translate URS and customer requirements into control system designs
  • Support system architecture definition across controls and automation layers
  • Work closely with mechanical and electrical teams to deliver integrated solutions
  • Support build, test, and validation of automation systems
  • Ensure systems are delivered on time and to specification

2.3 Continuous Improvement

  • Contribute to development of modular machine platforms and software standards
  • Improve code quality, system robustness, and reusability
  • Support development of internal engineering standards and best practices
  • Stay up to date with automation technologies and industry trends

3. Key Competencies

  • Strong hands-on experience in PLC programming (Allen-Bradley, Siemens, or equivalent)
  • Experience with robot programming and integration (Fanuc, ABB, KUKA, UR)
  • HMI/SCADA development experience
  • Strong debugging and fault-finding capability
  • Experience with automated machinery and system integration
  • Ability to interpret and implement URS requirements
  • Experience in GMP / pharma / medical device environments is an advantage
  • Electrical design experience (schematics, panel layouts, I/O design) is advantageous
  • Full Driving License Essential

  • Successful delivery of automation systems through FAT and SAT
  • High-quality, maintainable PLC and robot code
  • Strong contribution to commissioning and system performance
  • Effective collaboration across engineering disciplines
  • Positive feedback from customers and internal teams

Pay: €70,000.00-€85,000.00 per year
