Full job description

General Practitioner (Sessional) – Student Health Service

Role Overview

The General Practitioner (GP) provides scheduled clinical services within a nurse-led Student Health Service, delivering medical assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and clinical oversight for students requiring GP-level care. This is a sessional role designed to complement the day-to-day work of the Lead Nurse, with the GP providing both on-site consultations and remote clinical support between scheduled clinic sessions.

The role offers an attractive opportunity for a GP seeking a flexible, portfolio-style commitment alongside existing clinical practice, locum work, or other professional appointments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver scheduled on-site GP clinics for students, providing assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up care.
  • Provide remote clinical advice and telephone support outside scheduled clinic hours, as required.
  • Support emergency response and escalation pathways in collaboration with the Lead Nurse.
  • Provide clinical oversight and guidance for cases escalated by the nursing team.
  • Assist in determining appropriate referrals to specialist, secondary care, or community-based services.
  • Support the development and maintenance of clinical protocols, governance processes, and best-practice standards within the Student Health Service.
  • Contribute to continuity of care planning and multidisciplinary case discussions where appropriate.
  • Maintain accurate clinical records in accordance with professional, regulatory, and organisational requirements.

Essential Requirements

  • Full registration as a medical practitioner with the relevant Irish regulatory body and eligibility to practise as a General Practitioner in Ireland.
  • Current experience in general practice, private practice, or locum GP services.
  • Ability to work independently within a sessional clinical model.
  • Strong clinical judgement and decision-making skills.
  • Experience providing remote and telephone-based clinical consultations.
  • Excellent communication and collaborative working skills.

Desirable Qualifications and Experience

  • Previous experience working with young adults, students, or within educational settings.
  • Experience supporting nurse-led healthcare services.
  • Knowledge of mental health assessment and management within primary care.
  • Experience in occupational health, community medicine, or student health services.

Pay: €120.00-€180.00 per hour

Experience:

  • General practice: 2 years (required)

Work Location: In person
