Medical Scientist – NHISSOT, NATIONAL HISTOCOMPATIBILITY AND IMMUNOGENETICS SERVICE FOR SOLID ORGAN TRANSPLANTATION

Principal Duties & Responsibilities:
- To contribute to the provision of a high quality patient focused service.
- To perform such technical duties as directed by the Chief Medical Scientist /Deputy Chief Medical Scientist or Senior Medical Scientist.
- To assist in training Medical Laboratory Assistants, support staff and visiting workers as required.
- To contribute to maintaining department accreditation with the European Federation for Immunogenetics (EFI).
- To assist in the training of new and existing staff.
- To assist in implementing measures for Safety, Health and Welfare to all staff.
- To assist in providing statistical and management information when requested.
- To attend courses and meetings as appropriate to maintain up-to-date knowledge.
- To fulfil CPD requirements.
- To actively participate in external and internal quality assurances schemes.
- QA, stock checks, workload stats and audits as required.
- Validation/Batch acceptance of new methods, controls, preparation of reagents and controls.
- Reporting all results from the department within departmental turn-around-times.
- Assisting in the maintenance of the different transplant waiting lists.
- Routine maintenance/calibration and cleaning of instrumentation/equipment.
- Preparation for participation in the on-call service (for new fully trained staff on a permanent contract) as directed by the Chief Medical Scientist.
- Participating in the H&I monthly journal club.
- Answering phone queries from our user groups.
- To participate in the Joint Review Process.
- Any other duties as appropriate to the grade and qualifications.
Specific Responsibilities – Medical Scientists
Antibody Screening Section
- Performing routine and emergency assays
- Assisting in maintaining and monitoring the antibody status of all patients on the waiting lists
- Assisting in maintaining and monitoring the antibody status of all post transplant patients
Molecular Section
- HLA A, B, Cw, DR, DQα/β, DPα/β typing by SSO or SSP as appropriate
Serology Section
- HLA A, B, DR, DQ typing by CDC serological methods
- Crossmatching both auto and donor by CDC
- Crossmatching both auto and donor by Flow Cytometry
- Freezing/thawing donor cells
- Living Donor processing
H&I Specimen Reception
- Logging and receiving all samples for typing and screening in the laboratory
- Separation and logging of HLA antibody screening samples as received
Selection Criteria:
Selection criteria outline the qualifications, skills, knowledge and/or experience that the successful candidate would need to demonstrate for successful discharge of the responsibilities of the post.

Mandatory:
1 PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE, ETC.
(a) Candidates for appointment must possess:
(i) Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Medical Science from the Galway/Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT).
Or
(ii) Bachelor of Science (Honours) Biomedical Science, Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT).
Or
(iii) Bachelor in Science Honours degree in Biomedical Science from the Joint University College Cork – Cork Institute of Technology course
AND
Diploma in Clinical Laboratory Practice.
Or
(iv) Certificate in Medical Laboratory Science, Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT), Cork Institute of Technology (CIT) or Galway/Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT)
AND
Bachelor in Science (Applied Science) Honours degree (Biomedical option) from the University of Dublin/Dublin Institute of Technology (Awarded prior to 2002).
Or
(v) Bachelor of Biomedical Science, Cork Institute of Technology (CIT) AND BSc (Honours) Biomedical Sciences, University College Cork (UCC). (Awarded prior to 2013).
Or
(vi) Diploma in Medical Laboratory Sciences of the Dublin Institute of Technology, (DIT) or the Cork Institute of Technology (CIT) (Awarded prior to 1994).
Or
(vii) Certificate in Medical Laboratory Science awarded before 1997 by Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT), Cork Institute of Technology (CIT) or Galway/Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT).
Or
(viii) An equivalent qualification validated by the Academy of Clinical Science and Laboratory Medicine (ACSLM) and or CORU Registered.
And
(b) Candidates must have the requisite knowledge and ability (including a high standard of suitability and professional ability) for the proper discharge of the duties of the office
