Main Purpose of the Role

  • Responsible for maintaining the effectiveness of the Microbiology Laboratory and supporting microbiological testing activities in accordance with GMP, ISO standards, and regulatory requirements.

  • Ensure compliance with Abbott Quality System requirements, site procedures, and divisional policies while supporting continuous improvement initiatives.

  • Support contamination control programs and environmental monitoring activities for manufacturing operations.

  • Adhere to Health and Safety requirements within the laboratory environment and identify opportunities to improve EHS performance.

Main Responsibilities

  • Perform routine microbiological testing including bioburden, environmental monitoring, water testing, and product-related sample analysis in a cGMP regulated environment.

  • Conduct environmental monitoring of classified manufacturing areas, cleanrooms, and controlled environments.

  • Prepare, qualify, and maintain microbiological media, reagents, and laboratory consumables.

  • Perform microbial identification using approved laboratory methods and technologies.

  • Ensure all work is carried out in compliance with applicable regulatory standards, Abbott Quality System requirements, and standard operating procedures (SOPs).

  • Support microbiology laboratory operations, including equipment calibration, maintenance, and routine performance verification.

  • Create, review, and update laboratory documentation, procedures, specifications, and records as required.

  • Ensure the laboratory is adequately stocked, organised, inspection-ready, and all materials are appropriately labelled.

  • Participate in validation activities including method validations, method transfers, equipment qualifications, and sterilisation validation support.

  • Review and verify laboratory test results for accuracy, completeness, and compliance.

  • Complete records in a timely manner and maintain data integrity in accordance with GMP requirements.

  • Assist with investigations, root cause analysis, and provide technical support for microbiological excursions and out-of-specification results.

  • Support unplanned events and escalate atypical results or contamination events promptly to the Supervisor.

  • Initiate and complete deviations, CAPAs, change controls, and non-conformance reports in accordance with site procedures.

  • Trend environmental monitoring, water, and microbiological test data, including the generation and presentation of monthly, quarterly, and annual reports.

  • Maintain a “Right First Time” approach to laboratory documentation and quality records.

  • Support internal audits, regulatory inspections, and continuous improvement projects.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including Manufacturing, Quality Assurance, Engineering, and Validation.

Experience & Education

  • BSc in Microbiology, Biological Sciences, Biotechnology, Biomedical Science, or equivalent scientific discipline.

  • Preferred two years’ work experience in a Microbiology, Quality, Pharmaceutical, Medical Device, or related regulated environment.
