This position is with PJ Designs (Metalcraft) Ltd. The role forms part of an Innovation Boost project supported by InterTradeIreland. Salary support under the programme is provided for 18 months; however, the employment contract is with PJ Designs (Metalcraft) Ltd and is not limited to the funding period.
P.J. Designs (Metalcraft) Ltd is a County Donegal-based manufacturer specialising in architectural and structural steel products. Established in 1998, the company designs, manufactures and installs bespoke staircases, stair balustrades, balconies, gates, railings and custom metalwork for residential, commercial and public sector clients throughout Ireland and the UK.
The company is CE approved and has built a strong reputation for quality craftsmanship, engineering expertise and customer service. Operating from its manufacturing facility in Drumkeen, Co. Donegal, PJ Designs combines traditional fabrication skills with modern design and manufacturing techniques to deliver bespoke and high-quality steelwork solutions.
Job Description
PJ Designs seeks a motivated and innovative Mechanical Design Engineer to join the company as part of an Innovation Boost project focused on the development of a new stair product platform. The successful candidate will work closely with the company management team and academic partners to research, design, develop and validate innovative product solutions that will support future business growth, improve operational efficiency and strengthen the company's in-house design capabilities.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop concepts and detailed designs for new product solutions.
- Produce 3D CAD models, engineering drawings and technical documentation.
- Apply Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA) principles throughout the design process.
- Develop bills of materials, component specifications and assembly documentation.
- Support the manufacture, assembly and testing of prototypes.
- Analyse test results and implement design improvements where required.
- Work closely with management, production personnel and academic partners throughout the project.
- Contribute to project planning, reporting, presentations and dissemination activities.
- Support the implementation of project outcomes within the business.
- Identify opportunities for future product development and innovation.
- Ensure project objectives, milestones and deliverables are achieved.
This position provides an opportunity to gain practical experience in product development, engineering design, prototyping and manufacturing while playing a key role in the delivery of an innovation-led project within a growing engineering business.
The successful graduate will lead this project, in a supportive partnership with North West Regional College (NWRC) as part of the InterTradeIreland’s Innovation Boost Programme.
Interviews will be held approximately week commencing: 12/10/2026
Essential Criteria:
- Minimum Level 7 Degree (RoI) / Level 6 Degree (NI/GB) in Mechanical Engineering, Product Design, Manufacturing Engineering, Design Engineering or a related discipline.
- At least 1 year's experience using 3D CAD software such as SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Inventor or similar packages for engineering design and product development.
- At least 1 year's experience applying design for manufacture and assembly principles to fabricated steel, structural or mechanical products within an engineering or manufacturing environment.
- Must be legally entitled to work in Ireland/EU and travel throughout Ireland as required; if you do require a visa/work permit allowing you to work in Ireland/EU you must upload a copy of it with your application. Failure to provide a relevant Visa/Work permit may result in your application not being considered.
Desirable Criteria:
- 2 years'+ experience in 3D CAD modelling and engineering design.
- At least 1 year's experience supporting product development projects from concept through to prototype.
- At least 1 year's experience producing engineering drawings, technical specifications and bills of materials.
- At least 1 year’s experience within the fabrication, structural steel, architectural metalwork or construction sectors.
Pay: €36,000.00-€40,000.00 per year
