Job Description: Staff Nurse (Dementia Residential Respite & Day Care)

Location: Marian House – The Joe & Helen O'Toole Respite Home, Ballindine, Claremorris, Co. Mayo

Reports To: Person in Charge (PIC)
Hours of Work: Flexible, ranging between 12 and 25 hours per week (Part-Time / Flexible Full-Time, across day, night, and weekend shifts)

Job Purpose

To deliver high-quality, person-centred, dementia-specialist nursing care to individuals accessing our state-of-the-art residential respite and day care services. Reporting directly to the Person in Charge, you will provide a safe, therapeutic, and welcoming environment that enhances the quality of life for our clients while offering vital support and peace of mind to family carers.

Key Responsibilities

1. Clinical Care & Dementia Specialism

• Deliver expert, evidence-based nursing care tailored to the complex physical, psychological, and emotional needs of individuals living with dementia.
• Conduct comprehensive clinical admissions and assessments for both residential respite stays and day care admissions.
• Manage and safely administer medications in strict compliance with NMBI guidelines and organizational policies.
• Monitor client health continuously, recognizing early signs of clinical deterioration or changes in behaviour, and taking appropriate action.
• Implement compassionate, non-pharmacological interventions to support clients experiencing responsive behaviours.

2. Residential & Day Care Operations

• Collaborate closely with the Person in Charge to ensure smooth continuity of care between day care schedules and overnight residential stays.
• Supervise and support Healthcare Assistants (HCAs), promoting a collaborative, professional, and respectful team culture.
• Assist in organizing and delivering meaningful, dementia-inclusive social activities and cognitive therapies.
• Manage shift handovers thoroughly to ensure seamless care communication across day, night, and weekend teams.

3. Communication & Carer Liaison

• Act as a primary, empathetic point of contact for families and carers, offering reassurance during admissions, and detailed feedback during their stay and upon discharge.
• Maintain exceptionally accurate, confidential, and up-to-date care plans and clinical records.
• Liaise effectively with multidisciplinary team members, including GPs, public health nurses, and community mental health teams as required.

4. Compliance, Quality & Safety

• Ensure all care practices fully align with HIQA standards, HSE regulations, and Western Alzheimers policies.
• Maintain rigorous standards of infection control, health and safety, and adult safeguarding.
• Participate in clinical audits, risk assessments, and ongoing professional development to maintain the highest standards of care.

Requirements & Qualifications

• Registration: Live registration on the General, Psychiatric, or Intellectual Disability Nurse Division of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI).
• Experience: Previous experience in dementia care, care of the older person, or a residential respite setting is strongly preferred.
• Skills: Strong clinical judgment, excellent interpersonal communication, and strong leadership/supervisory skills.
• Core Attributes: A deeply compassionate, patient, and flexible approach to care.
• Compliance: Subject to satisfactory Garda Vetting and reference checks.
