Post Summary: St. James Hospital and the School of Nursing and Midwifery is offering one part-time funded scholarships for entry into the PhD programme March or September 2027. The scholarships are open to nurses and midwives who are not currently registered for a PhD, but who have a strong desire to discover new practices and knowledge through evidence based approaches. The Joint PhD Scholarship offers a pathway to nurses to conduct research that advances innovation in practice within St James Hospital and associated partners, for example to improve the integration of care, services or health systems. The Scholarships offer opportunities for suitably qualified nurses to pursue a Structured PhD which must align with one of with the nursing strategy pillars in St. James Hospital and of the Trinity Centre for Practice and Healthcare Innovation (TCPHI) research centre in the School of Nursing and Midwifery, Trinity College Dublin offers leading expertise: https://nursingmidwifery.tcd.ie/research/research-themes/index.php

The following documentation must be attached to the application:
  • Cover letter and CV
  • Personal statement including career plan (500 words)
  • Two letters of reference (academic) and one from clinical area (e.g. Assistant Director
of Nursing)
  • Research proposal of approx. 3,000 words, to include specifically the following
elements:
  • Abstract (300 words, approx.)
  • Background context and rationale for the research
  • Aims, objectives and central research questions
  • Methodology including details of any specialist knowledge/data required
  • Relevant ethical issues
  • Milestones and deliverables (Gantt chart)
  • Where the research fits within the School and College research strategies
  • Dissemination plans and potential impact
The applicant will work with a potential supervisor from TCPHI to develop a robust Research
Proposal to be submitted as part of the application process. Trinity College Dublin will charge
an application fee. You may receive notification following your application to college that your
application to be a PhD student has been accepted. This is a separate process from your
application for the Scholarship. You will be notified of the outcome of your Scholarship
application separately.
