Full job description

The Assistant Farm Manager supports the Farm Manager, and wider farm team, in running a diverse, intensive commercial, organic market garden in County Wicklow. This is a hands-on leadership role combining practical vegetable production with organising daily work, maintaining high standards, supporting colleagues and anticipating upcoming workloads. The successful candidate will help ensure efficient and consistent farm operations while progressively taking on greater responsibility for team coordination, crop production and wider farm management.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

● Help organise daily and weekly tasks, ensuring priorities are clear and work is completed efficiently.

● Carry out practical horticultural tasks, including propagation, seeding, transplanting, bed preparation, crop maintenance, irrigation and harvesting.

● Undertake poly-tunnel production tasks, including trellising, tying, pruning, crop maintenance and harvesting.

● Support harvesting, packing and preparation for customer deliveries as required.

● Maintain high standards of crop quality, presentation, organisation and safe working practices.

●Operate and maintain farm tools, machinery and equipment safely and responsibly.

● Anticipate upcoming workloads and identify tasks requiring attention based on crop development, weather and seasonal production plans.

● Recognise and communicate problems early, adapt to changing priorities and contribute practical solutions.

● Work closely with the Farm Manager and wider team, supporting and training less experienced colleagues where appropriate.

● Contribute ideas to improve workflow, efficiency and consistency across farm operations.

● Progressively develop the knowledge and skills required to take responsibility for a wider range of operational tasks and provide cover for the Farm Manager when needed.

Essential:

● Hold a third-level qualification in either horticulture, agronomy, agriculture, or another scientific discipline related to farming or biological systems management.

● Fluent in English, with strong written and verbal communication skills and attention to detail.

● At least 3 years' practical experience in a commercial market garden, horticultural enterprise or similar intensive growing operation.

●Substantial hands-on experience growing vegetables or other food crops commercially, covering multiple stages of production.

● Working knowledge and ability to use, maintain and repair standard market garden machinery and tools, including a BCS two-wheel tractor, greens harvester, mowers, etc.

● Ability to undertake physically demanding horticultural work on a daily basis both outdoors and in polytunnels throughout the year.

●A proactive, practical approach to problem-solving, with the ability to work independently and anticipate upcoming tasks.

●Strong organisational and communication skills, with proven ability to coordinate work, manage priorities and collaborate effectively with colleagues.

● Availability to work full-time, five days per week, with occasional weekend work when required by seasonal demands.

● Full clean driving licence and confidence driving for farm-related duties where necessary.

Desirable:

● Experience working within organic, regenerative or low-input horticultural systems.

● Experience in intensive vegetable production, commercial poly-tunnels, propagation and succession planting.

● Experience operating small-scale agricultural machinery and working with irrigation systems.

● Knowledge of soil fertility, crop nutrition, irrigation management or crop planning.

● Experience supporting, training or supervising other growers.

● Experience supplying wholesale, restaurant or direct-to-consumer customers.
