The Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity provides emotional, physical and financial wellbeing support to people working in construction and their families.

We are a small, dedicated charity, committed to making sure that no construction worker or their family feels alone during a difficult time.

We are looking for an experienced and compassionate Caseworker to join our Support Services team, providing practical advice and support to individuals and families across the Republic of Ireland.

About the role

As a Caseworker, you will support people who may be experiencing financial difficulties, housing problems, ill health or other challenging circumstances.

You will take the time to understand each client’s situation, identify the support they may be entitled to and help them put a realistic plan in place. This could include support with welfare benefits, housing and homelessness services, utility costs, budgeting, debt advice, healthcare services and other local or national supports.

You will manage your own caseload and support clients remotely by telephone, email and through online referrals. You will also work closely with colleagues, external organisations and local services to help clients achieve the best possible outcome.

Key responsibilities

• Complete thorough assessments to understand each client’s circumstances, needs and priorities.
• Provide clear and accurate information about welfare benefits, financial assistance and other supports available in the Republic of Ireland.
• Help clients understand eligibility requirements and complete benefit or support applications where appropriate.
• Support clients with budgeting, money management and accessing suitable debt advice.
• Provide advice to people struggling with utility bills, energy costs or access to essential services.
• Help clients experiencing housing difficulties or homelessness to identify and access the right local, regional or national support.
• Signpost and refer clients to specialist organisations, including the Money Advice and Budgeting Service (MABS), housing services, healthcare providers and community organisations.
• Work with clients to agree practical support plans that encourage independence and provide longer-term solutions.
• Manage a varied caseload, including clients with complex or urgent needs.
• Provide compassionate and non-judgemental support while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries.
• Keep clear, accurate and up-to-date records of all casework, referrals and outcomes on the charity’s client management system.
• Work in line with the charity’s policies, procedures, service standards and eligibility criteria.
• Take part in regular supervision, case reviews and team meetings.
• Remotely build positive working relationships with colleagues, external agencies and support services across the Republic of Ireland.
• Share information, good practice and ideas that could help improve the support we provide.
• Maintain confidentiality and ensure personal information is handled securely and in line with data protection requirements.
• Carry out any other reasonable duties relating to the role and the needs of the charity.

About you

You will have experience of supporting vulnerable people and be confident working with clients who may be facing complex, sensitive or distressing circumstances.

You will be a good listener, able to assess information fairly and explain complicated processes in a clear and supportive way. You will also be comfortable working independently, managing your own caseload and being part of a remote team.

Essential experience and knowledge

• Professional experience of supporting vulnerable individuals or families.
• Good working knowledge of the Republic of Ireland’s welfare benefit system, including eligibility criteria and application processes.
• An understanding of the utility landscape in the Republic of Ireland and the difficulties faced by people struggling with energy and household costs.
• Knowledge of the housing and homelessness situation in the Republic of Ireland, including how available services and supports vary between regions.
• Experience of helping people with budgeting, money management and financial decision-making.
• An understanding of debt advice and support services, including MABS.
• Experience of managing a caseload and prioritising urgent or complex cases.
• Strong listening, communication and interpersonal skills.
• The ability to explain complex information clearly and sensitively.
• Good administrative skills, with the ability to keep accurate and confidential records.
• Confidence using digital systems and supporting people by telephone, email and online channels.
• The ability to remain calm, objective and professional when dealing with sensitive situations.
• A positive and collaborative approach to working as part of a remote team.

Desirable experience and knowledge

• Knowledge of the Irish healthcare system and the difficulties people may face when accessing medical or community support.
• A willingness to develop further knowledge of healthcare pathways and available medical supports.
• Knowledge of pensions and pension-related support in the Republic of Ireland.
• Experience of working within a charity, advice service, community organisation, housing service or similar setting.
• An understanding of the construction industry and the challenges construction workers and their families may experience.
