Full job description

The Role

The Café Supervisor is responsible for leading the café floor during their shifts and ensuring the bar runs smoothly, efficiently and to a consistently high standard.

This is a hands-on role. You will work alongside the team while taking responsibility for the shift - ensuring drinks are made correctly, customers receive excellent service, the team knows what they are doing and the space is always presented at its best.

We are looking for someone who naturally takes ownership, notices the small things and doesn't wait to be asked to solve a problem.

Key ResponsibilitiesShift Leadership

  • Take ownership of the café floor during assigned shifts.
  • Lead, motivate and support the bar team throughout the day.
  • Delegate tasks and ensure responsibilities are completed.
  • Manage breaks and floor coverage.
  • Respond quickly and calmly to issues as they arise.
  • Ensure opening, closing and handover procedures are completed correctly.
  • Communicate relevant issues and updates clearly to management.

Drink Quality & Standards

  • Ensure every drink is prepared according to The Matcha Bar recipes and standards.
  • Maintain consistency across matcha preparation, milk texture, presentation and house-made flavours.
  • Identify quality issues immediately and coach team members where required.
  • Maintain excellent hygiene, food-safety and cleaning standards.
  • Ensure equipment and workstations are maintained correctly.

Customer Experience

  • Create a warm, efficient and knowledgeable customer experience.
  • Lead by example in how customers are welcomed and served.
  • Confidently answer questions about matcha, products and the menu.
  • Handle customer feedback or complaints professionally and appropriately.
  • Recognise regular customers and help create the sense of community The Matcha Bar is known for.

Team Leadership & Training

  • Support the training and onboarding of new team members.
  • Provide real-time coaching and feedback during shifts.
  • Help maintain a positive, respectful and high-performing team culture.
  • Identify training or performance issues and communicate these to management.
  • Hold the team accountable to agreed standards while remaining approachable and supportive.

Daily Operations

  • Monitor stock levels during shifts and flag shortages before they become problems.
  • Help minimise waste and ensure correct portioning.
  • Ensure deliveries are received and stored correctly where required.
  • Maintain presentation of the café and retail area throughout the day.
  • Complete daily operational checklists and required records.
  • Escalate maintenance, equipment, staffing or operational issues appropriately.

What We're Looking For

  • Previous supervisory or senior hospitality experience.
  • Strong café, speciality coffee or premium hospitality experience preferred.
  • Comfortable leading a team in a busy customer-facing environment.
  • High standards and exceptional attention to detail.
  • Reliable, organised and proactive.
  • Confident giving direction and constructive feedback.
  • Calm and solutions-focused under pressure.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Genuine interest in matcha, hospitality and creating an exceptional customer experience.
  • Someone who takes ownership rather than waiting to be managed.

Matcha experience is welcome but not essential - full product and preparation training will be provided.

Key Measures of Success

Success in this role means:

  • Consistently high drink quality and recipe compliance.
  • Smooth, well-organised shifts.
  • Excellent customer experience.
  • Strong cleanliness and presentation standards.
  • Reduced waste and strong stock awareness.
  • Team members are well supported, trained and accountable.
  • Issues are identified and resolved proactively.
  • Management does not need to constantly intervene in the day-to-day running of the café.

Reporting & Role Boundaries

The Café Supervisor reports to the owner and is responsible for leading the café during their assigned shifts.

The right person will care deeply about quality, people and the details - and take pride in making every day at The Matcha Bar run exceptionally well.
