Full job description

The Medical Gases Maintenance Engineer will be responsible for the planned, reactive, and emergency maintenance of Medical Gas Pipeline Systems (MGPS) within live healthcare, educational and laboratory environments.

The role ensures patient safety, system reliability, and statutory compliance with HTM standards and HSE requirements. The position involves working in operational hospitals, educational campuses, pharma sites and laboratory facilities supporting clinical services, and participating in 24/7 emergency call-out rotas.

Maintenance & Compliance

  • Carry out Planned Preventive Maintenance (PPM) on MGPS in accordance with HTM 02-01 and HTS procedures
  • Inspect, test, and service of Medical air, oxygen, nitrous oxide, CO₂, and vacuum systems, Compressor and vacuum plants, Manifolds, terminal units, valves, and alarm systems. Complete functional testing, fault diagnosis, and remedial works on live systems
  • Ensure systems remain fully compliant with HSE, HIQA, and hospital permit-to-work requirements

Reactive & Emergency Works

  • Respond to 24/7 emergency call-outs for MGPS faults
  • Safely isolate, reinstate, and verify systems with minimal disruption to clinical services
  • Liaise directly with hospital estates, clinical staff, and authorised persons

Essential Requirements

  • Qualified Mechanical Fitter / Plumber / Pipefitter or equivalent trade
  • Experience working on Medical Gas Pipeline Systems in hospitals or healthcare facilities or process facilities
  • Strong understanding of HTM 02-01 and medical gas safety procedures
  • Experience working in live hospital environments
  • Full clean Irish driving licence
  • Ability to participate in on-call rotas

Desirable Requirements

  • Authorised Person (MGPS) or Competent Person experience
  • Familiarity with estates procedures and hospital permit systems
  • Compressor experience, including service, fault finding, and basic maintenance of medical air compressor and vacuum plant systems
  • Ability to complete small works independently, including minor pipework modifications and brazing where required
  • Confident working independently on live sites, planning the task, managing priorities, and communicating clearly with estates and clinical teams
